Object of Desire: The Cassiopeia

By Samantha Coles

This story originally appeared in the November/December 2017 issue of Elite Traveler.

Specially designed for London’s Masterpiece Art Fair 2017, Linley’s Cassiopeia screen is an interpretation of one of Jonathan Yeo’s earliest nude paintings, Scarlett (Cassiopeia Study), 1999. The first time the British artist has collaborated on a piece of furniture, Yeo worked closely with Linley to create the marquetry screen, hand selecting around 40 different types of veneer including eucalyptus, sycamore and quilted maple, many of which are used in their natural form. The screens are in demand for superyacht interiors and we can see why—the reverse side of the screen is dressed in a rich claret Connolly leather, with a brushed brass and polished aluminium coat hook and hanger on one panel, a glass mirror and walnut accessory tray on the middle panel, and, acting as a vertical bar, the third panel has shelves with polished aluminium rails for holding crystal glasses and decanters.
