Spa of the Week: The Dewberry Spa

By Olivia Cuccaro

By Olivia Cuccaro

They call it Southern comfort for a reason. In Charleston, the laidback lifestyle of South Carolina is at its most relaxed and most luxurious. Housed in a former federal building, the limewashed Dewberry hotel is home to a spa that embodies the mellow southern atmosphere through its carriage house-inspired character.

On the second floor of The Dewberry, the tranquil spa features cypress-covered walls emanating scents of spice (yes, you read the correctly — the walls are actually scented) for an experience that’s warm and inviting. Designed by founder John Dewberry and industry expert Lydia Mondavi, the spa comprises five treatment rooms adorned with handcrafted floral wallpaper, heated water beds enveloped in Egyptian cotton, and local artwork for a calming touch.

Enter into the dedicated relaxation room where a spa concierge will welcome you with custom-blended Dewberry Tea and an aromatherapy neck pillow as you unwind in a chaise lounge. When it’s time for treatment, choose from an array of services that emphasize the natural elements of the Lowcountry — most prominently the native dewberry plant known for its anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and soothing benefits. The spa menu includes facials, massages, body treatments, waxing, hair and scalp treatments, and nail care, with “luxury additions” like eye renewal and exfoliating pore cleansing on offer to accompany your service.

The Dewberry signature facial utilizes a signature rice mask during a scalp and neck massage, followed by a hydration mask and acupressure massage of hands and feet. Pair this with the 90-minute detoxifying seaweed leaf wrap, which incorporates fresh leaves of Atlantic seaweed and dry brushing exfoliation to detoxify, moisturize and soften. For couples, book the De-Stress at The Dewberry for Two package which includes a signature facial and signature massage tailored for a pair to enjoy.

When your day of Southern spa serenity is through, retire to the charm-filled Charleston Flat that combines the area’s traditional design elements with those of the building’s mid-century features. Displaying hardwood flooring throughout, the flat encompasses a king-size canopy bed, Danby Vermont marble bathroom with double vanity, walk-in shower and deep cast iron soaking tub, in-room dining area and expansive living area with leather wingback chair travertine coffee table.

The Dewberry is located at 334 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina, 29403. For more information, please visit thedewberrycharleston.com.
