1.For Premium Airlines, Private Jet Travelers Could Be Their Savior

I am here in Boston at the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) Annual Conference where there is a concerned mood fueled by the sluggish U.S. economy (perhaps 2 percent growth) and a decelerating Europe – where British Airways CEO Keith Williams noted UK growth has been revised down to flat, bad news continues from Spain and southern Europe, and there is a general malaise except for perhaps Germany.  At the same time, there are of course, worries about China.

Interestingly, private jet travelers could be a savior for many international airlines.  According to the National Business Aviation Association, between 70 and 90 percent of North American private jet users fly commercially when traveling between continents.

Jeff Cacy of Boeing Aircraft Company noted that 15 percent of global passengers account for 50 percent of airline revenues.   Yet a recent Wall Street Journal article noted less than 25 percent of international first class seats are filled with first class paying passengers – the rest are filled with frequent flier upgrades and redemptions. Yes, nine people have ordered the new 747-800 as private jets.  But clearly the needle in the haystack for premium airlines is the consumer who will pay $5,000 to $10,000 one-way to fly in premium cabins.

When one considers that is the hourly average for private jet users, international First and Business Class fares are a literal bargain.

What’s more, the private jet traveler market is not small.  According to the Federal Aviation Association, there were some 3.9 million private jet flights in the US alone in 2011!  In fact, each issue of Elite Traveler delivers over 500,000 private jet fliers.

2. Private Aviation Delivers Jobs and Money According to the Atlanta Business Journal, Cobb County formally opened its new row of corporate hangars at the county’s McCollum Field airport on Friday.

The $7 million project, which will have space to house about 25 midsize corporate jets, is being touted as an economic development boost for the county. Cobb leases the hangar space to Atlanta Executive Jet Center, which funded and built the new hangars.

They were needed because existing hangars had reached capacity. A state economic impact study found that McCollum Field contributes about $112 million annually to the community, with roughly 840 airport-dependent jobs, including 200 direct airport employees. The new hangars are expected to bring more private business and associated spending to the airport.

McCollum Field currently operates without county general funds, receiving its funding from fees charged to private companies located at the facility, said airport manager Karl Von Hagel.

3. U.S. Companies Scale Back Business Travel

According to the Associated Press, “U.S. companies are scaling back their travel plans in response to Europe’s financial crisis and uncertainty about the economy at home.

“American business travelers are expected to take 437.9 million trips this year, the Global Business Travel Association said this past week. That’s down 1.2 percent from an estimate made in April by the travel and meetings trade group.

“The outlook for next year is even worse, with the trade group lowering its forecast to 435 million trips, down 1.9 percent from April’s estimate. The report noted, “Airlines rely on business travelers who often buy more-expensive, last-minute tickets. They also purchase pricey business-class and first-class seats, which can cost as much as ten times the price of a coach seat. However, sales of those seats also appear to be slowing, according to the latest report from The International Air Transport Association, a trade group for the airline industry.”

5. Elite Traveler Delivers Big Bookings for Sparkling Hill Resort

Dear Marina,

We have had our first three bookings as a result of Elite Traveler Hotels / Resorts / Spas – a five-night Penthouse reservation with 2 day Heli-Fishing expedition at $12,000 before Food and Beverage, and spa revenue.

Our second booking came a couple days ago and is for three nights in a suite for $3,600, and we expect at least as much additional revenue from spa, food and beverage and other spend.  The third booking just this week for two nights and a full day Heli-wine tour at $12,000.

While over $25,000 in room revenue is great on its own, the fact that your readers will spend even more on hotel services shows the true value of the audience Elite Traveler reaches. Traditionally, our guests spend twice the room dollar value in our 40,000 sq.ft. KurSpa.

Needless to say in an era of web driven deals, it is nice to find a media vehicle that can deliver such high value business.  Best of all these bookings came in the first couple weeks the issue was out, so we have very high hopes for even more business ahead!
