Cocktail of the Week: World Whisky Day

By Olivia Cuccaro

By Olivia Cuccaro

Single malt, single grain or blended, this Saturday honors whiskies from around the globe. Early distillation in Scotland is just part of the spirit’s rich history – taxation gave rise to moonshine in Great Britain, sour mash revolutionized American bourbon and the Coffey still streamlined whisky production in Ireland and beyond. Take it neat, on the rocks or try our picks of whisky cocktails for World Whisky Day.

Glenfiddich A Scottish Lassi

  • 2 parts chamomile-infused Glenfiddich 12 Year
  • 1 part unsweetened Lassi (yogurt drink)
  • 3/4 part Orgeat
  • 3/4 part lemon juice

To create this Scotch whisky cocktail developed by Glenfiddich’s own Allan Roth, first pour a bottle of Glenfiddich 12 Year whisky into a pitcher and add 20 grams of dried chamomile flowers (or two chamomile tea bags) to infuse. Let stand 10 minutes, strain and refrigerate. Shake all ingredients over ice and strain into a coupe. Garnish with dried chamomile flowers.

Tullamore D.E.W. Whiskey Sour

  • 2 parts Tullamore D.E.W.
  • 3/4 part fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 part simple syrup
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 1 egg white

To create this Irish whiskey cocktail, add Tullamore D.E.W. whiskey and ingredients to a shaker without ice. Dry shake hard. Add ice and shake hard again. Strain drink over ice into a rocks glass. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

Crown Royal Vanilla Mule

  • 1.5 oz Crown Royal Vanilla
  • 2 oz ginger
  • 1 oz soda
  • 1 lime wedge

To create this Canadian whisky cocktail, combine Crown Royal Vanilla whisky and ingredients over ice in a mule mug. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Blade and Bow New Fashioned

  • 1.25 oz Blade and Bow Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
  • .5 oz oz simple syrup
  • .75 oz St-Germain
  • 1 orange slice
  • soda

To create this bourbon cocktail, pour Blade and Bow Kentucky Bourbon Straight Whiskey and simple syrup into an old fashioned glass. Muddle one orange slice, add ice then St-Germain and stir. Top with a splash of soda and garnish with an orange slice and cherry.

Royal Salute Royal Foxhunt

  • 1.75 oz Royal Salute
  • .5 oz Plymouth Sloe Gin
  • .25 oz Lustau East India Solera Sherry

To create this Scotch whisky cocktail, stir Royal Salute on ice, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist. Or, if you happen to be on a foxhunt, use your handy hipflask.
