No chocolate lover should pass through Paris without sampling Angelina’s renowned ‘chocolat chaud à l’ancienne l’Africain’, a thick, unctuous hot chocolate completely unrelated to the bland over-milky drinks served by most coffee shops.

There are also plenty of options for non-chocoholics, including sweets such as house pastry ‘le Mont-Blanc’, a meringue with chestnut purée, and various delicious teas and coffees. The Belle Epoque decor is chic as chic can be with its frescos and gilded mirrors, and has attracted fashionable figures such as Coco Chanel and Marcel Proust.
