There is something to be said for making the everyday feel a little less ordinary.

For those committed coffee drinkers among us, the morning cup – or an 8pm espresso if you’re Mediterranean – is a ritual in and of itself. One that deserves objects with as much thought behind them as the coffee – however strong you take yours.

From fine bone china cups to technically-advanced machines that you’ll actually want to leave on display, these are the luxury coffee accessories that get it right.

The Experts’ Take

What the coffee cognoscenti want you to know.

Eirik Holth and Gabriel Shohet, founders of Black Sheep Coffee, believe that "high-end doesn’t mean flashy or complicated – it means the tool does its job exceptionally well, day after day, without getting in the way of the coffee. A burr grinder that delivers uniform particle size across the range you use as inconsistent grind size will kill flavor and make it hard to replicate your recipe, no matter how good the beans are. Durability and cleanability matter too – something that’s built to last and easy to maintain." Niall Munro, founder of Birch, recommends you "scope out good speciality beans first and foremost. Scales are important for weighing out and extracting a good brew. The Orea 01 is a great piece of kit for brewing filter coffee." Holth and Shohet agree: "While your bean of choice and brewing style will depend on your personal preferences (and there’s no simple right or wrong answer here, regardless of whether you’re pulling Robusta Revival shots from an espresso machine or making Blue Volcano in a French press) – get a quality grinder for maximum flavor. As does, David Cutler, coffee specialist at Lavazza, who says "a good quality grinder is one of the most important accessories for anyone looking to elevate their coffee experience at home."

The Names to Know

The brands making a case for luxury coffee accessories.

Once upon a time, coffee machines were something you quickly shoved into a hidden corner when guests came over. Now, a growing crop of design-led brands are making machines and accessories that can be displayed with pride, giving birth to the rise of the 'coffee corner' in interior-led homes.

Alessi has been designing stylish coffee accessories for years, making everyday objects like espresso pots look cool through interesting shapes and structures. Smeg is renowned for bringing its signature 1950s-inspired styling to coffee machines, while La Pavoni takes a more old-school approach to Italian-made barista machines.

The fashion houses have even got involved: Dior and Prada have brought their own visual signatures to coffee cups and accessories. Whichever you choose for your space, look for pieces that are built to last and worth the investment, especially as you’ll be using them regularly (...most likely several times a day).

Ways to Style

How to give your coffee corner some serious counter appeal.

Start by carving out a dedicated area of your kitchen. If you’ve invested in a machine as handsome as Giobagnara’s leather-clad Zenius, let it have some breathing room. Then add in a tray: something in marble, wood or stone will gives accessories are timeless and statement. For an injection of personality, keep your favorite cups nearby – particularly if they’re as good-looking as L’Objet’s – and add a coffee pot if you have one worthy of showing off. The only thing to be ruthless about is clutter: hide those unsightly coffee packets and pods away in a nearby cupboard or drawer.
