Few cities have made shopping such an integral part of the visitor experience as New York. The city welcomed 65 million visitors in 2025, generating $55.6bn in direct visitor spending.

More recently, Manhattan has welcomed an impressive wave of designer flagships, with the latest generation increasingly feeling like an extension of the brands themselves, rather than simply another place to shop. Take Louis Vuitton’s East 57th Street address, which has made headlines  around the world with its own café, chocolate atelier, library, and rotating installations.

We tapped the expert concierges and hotel managers at some of the city’s top luxury hotels to find out where to head first. From New York institutions to independent boutiques, vintage dealers, and the newest flagships, here is where to go for the best luxury shopping in New York City.

“New York is one of the great fashion capitals of the world,” says chief concierge at St. Regis New York Regina Falling. Knowing what you want, however, can help narrow down where to go. Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side remain the obvious addresses for the biggest international houses, while SoHo has become a destination for fashion, design, and newer flagships.

“SoHo, Hudson Yards, the West Village and Midtown each offer a very distinct shopping experience,” adds Marcel Thoma, general manager at Mandarin Oriental, New York, ranging from “luxury flagship stores and designer boutiques to charming local finds.” Meatpacking, the West Village, and Tribeca are better suited to independent boutiques and slower browsing, while Midtown and Hudson Yards offer a dense concentration of major names.

Few department stores carry quite the cultural weight of Bergdorf Goodman, long regarded as one of New York’s great retail institutions. As Wendy Goodman, author of Assouline’s Very Bergdorf, explains, the department store’s appeal goes beyond the clothes inside: “Edwin Goodman wanted the store to look like an elegant private home in 1928.” Its position overlooking Central Park remains part of its draw, while the windows, she says, “are worth a trip alone.”

Further well-curated stores with unique mixes of brands and pieces include Printemps, Dover Street Market, and Bloomingdale’s, each worth a visit.

Impressive fashion storefronts, both in scale and design, have long been part of New York’s visual and cultural landscape, but the latest generation of flagships is putting more emphasis on the space itself.

Fifth Avenue is where the major houses are making the biggest statements. Prada has expanded its presence on the street with a dedicated menswear store at 720 Fifth Avenue. The 13,000-plus-sq-ft space spans two floors, with interiors inspired by the house’s Milanese heritage. More importantly for shoppers, it offers made-to-measure alongside a US-exclusive made to order service, where clients can create a custom wardrobe from materials including silk, cashmere, and calfskin.

Louis Vuitton has arguably gone a step further. While its historic Fifth Avenue flagship undergoes a multiyear renovation, its temporary home at 6 East 57th Street occupies five floors and 36,000 sq ft, making it the largest Louis Vuitton retail space in the US.

Alongside the collections are the house’s first US café and chocolate atelier, a library, private salons, and rotating installations. There is also a New York-exclusive capsule collection, including monogrammed skateboards, reworked Speedys, and baseball caps, giving the temporary store something you won’t find elsewhere.

British brands have also carved out substantial addresses. Thom Sweeney’s Madison Avenue flagship combines ready-to-wear with made-to-measure and bespoke fittings, alongside a private-shopping space and Sol’s, a bar and lounge for clients. Burberry’s renovated East 57th Street store merges the brand’s British heritage with its urban New York address, decorated with pieces by British artists, and carved in natural stone inspired by British limestone.

In SoHo, Dries Van Noten has a similarly carefully curated and crafted space – the brand took over a decade to find the right space for its first New York flagship. Van Noten personally oversaw the 3,530-sq-ft interior, filling it with art and design objects including a Tracey Emin work, a Gaetano Pesce resin armchair, and a 17th-century portrait. The collection on the rails was also the final one he designed before handing over the creative director role to Julian Klausner.

And, of course, no trip to New York is complete without a pair of brand new Manolo Blahniks – the store is “a must-visit for fashion lovers,” according to Falling.

Though world-renowned for its fashion stores and restaurants, New York has a strong network of design-forward homeware ones, too.

Many of Manhattan’s popular design stores trace their roots back over 20 years. Jonathan Adler opened his first store in SoHo in 1998, and his Atelier Adler continues that New York connection. The space combines the designer’s furniture, ceramics, and home accessories with a working pottery studio, so shoppers can catch a glimpse of the pieces being made.

Similarly, Ralph Pucci opened its Manhattan flagship in 1993. The 33,000-sq-ft Flatiron showroom spans the 11th and 12th floors, with skylit galleries and an in-house sculpting studio where many of its designs are made.

ABC Carpet & Home is a New York institution, somewhere to go and browse when you don’t quite know what you’re looking for. Its Flatiron flagship at 888 Broadway is a sprawling destination for furniture, lighting, tabletop, and decorative pieces, and home to over 5,000 one-of-a-kind rugs.

For linens, Sferra offers a unique shopping experience. Its Flatiron store occupies a 2,600-sq-ft Italianate townhouse built in 1853, with bedding, bath, and table linens arranged throughout the residential-style space. Schweitzer Linen is the more distinctly New York alternative, with a history in the city stretching back decades and three Manhattan stores. Its Lexington Avenue flagship focuses on bed, bath, and table linens, with the option to embroider and monogram pieces.

And Christofle is best place for dressing your dining table. Its 57th Street boutique offers a selection of silver-plated flatware, serving pieces, barware, and decorative accessories. There is a little more history to discover here, too: the New York store has featured vintage Christofle pieces once used aboard transatlantic ocean liners such as the Normandie, for which the French maison produced nearly 45,000 pieces in 1935.
