What to Do in Munich During the Day

By Chris Boyle

ALLIANZ ARENA

Munich offers more than boutique shopping and luxury spas. There is a wealth of cultural treasures for the elite traveler to explore during their visit.

We have picked some of our favorites; whether it be a visit to a museum, the opera, a nightclub or one of the world’s most famous festivals, there is something for everyone.

DEUTSCHES MUSEUM

DEUTSCHES MUSEUM

Founded in 1903 by engineer Oskar von Miller, the Deutsches Museum is one of the largest and most famous museums of technology and science in the world and contains 786,000 square feet of exhibition space.

Its systematically organized permanent exhibitions cover some of the most interesting areas of technology and the most important natural sciences, from mining to nuclear physics. Guided tours and demonstrations are a regular feature, while special exhibitions, conferences and events can often round off the wide-ranging program available to visitors. Enthusiasts of art or science of all ages will be amazed by the Deutsches Museum’s six floors and fifty exhibitions on display. The Deutsches Museum is open daily from 9am until 5pm, but is often closed on public holidays.

THE BAVARIAN STATE OPERA

THE BAVARIAN STATE OPERA

The Bavarian State Opera is one of the oldest opera houses in the world and has been one of few to maintain its fame throughout several centuries.

Founded by Henriette Adelheid of Savoy in 1653, it has showcased concerts and ballets, but it wasn’t until 1753 that the Opera was opened as a major stage. Elite travelers will be impressed by the venue’s electrifying exterior, magnificent interior and cavernous seating capacity of 2,100 people. The auditorium is complemented by a further five rows of stalls and a royal box overlooking the whole auditorium. The Bavarian State Opera has maintained its reputation throughout the 20th century, with the immediate postwar years seeing a series of great conductors. Past visitors have included Prince Charles and Vivienne Westwood. Elite clientele can enjoy a three-course meal arranged close to this venue in the famous Brenner restaurant. Enjoy hors d’oeuvre while listening to an introduction to the performance you will attend. The main course and the desert will be served after the show allowing you ample time to share your musical critiques. A member of the Bavarian State Opera will also join guests to ensure that no questions go unanswered. In addition a late-night guided tour can be arranged to follow the performance. VIP visitors can get a glimpse behind the scenes while the stage design is released to make your visit unique and unforgettable.

THE PINAKOTHEK DER MODERNE

THE PINAKOTHEK DER MODERNE

The Pinakothek der Moderne is one of the world’s largest museums of fine art. Its dimensions are comparable to those of the Centre Pompidou in Paris or the Tate Modern in London.

Opened in September 2002, and designed by Stephan Braunfels, the building features open and generous spaces that provide visitors with constantly changing and surprising insights. Working in conjunction with each other under one roof in the Pinakothek der Moderne are four independent institutions: The Modern Art Collection, The International Design Museum Munich, The Architecture Museum of the Technical University and The State Graphics Collection. The major focus of the Pinakothek der Moderne is to preserve the identity of the individual collections while at the same time presenting their interrelated parts in a wider cultural context.
