Turks & Caicos Islands’ Tourism Industry Triumphs Over Hurricane Ike

By Pardhasaradhi Gonuguntla

TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS, B.W.I. – The Turks & Caicos Islands tourism industry is fully resumed according to government officials there. Minimally impacted by Hurricane Ike, Providenciales’ powder white sand beaches are clean and its crystal clear oceans are calm. Providenciales International Airport (PLS) has resumed all regular services and the Islands’ resorts and restaurants are largely reopened.

“We are blessed that our main tourist center of Providenciales escaped serious harm during Hurricane Ike, and are pleased to resume business as usual,” said Hon. Wayne Garland, executive chairman of the Turks & Caicos Tourist Board. “Tourism is vital to Turks & Caicos’ economy. With the return of vacationers to our esteemed resorts and establishments, the Turks & Caicos Tourist Board and government will be able to further support and expedite the recovery of the entire destination and those less fortunate.”

The majority of Providenciales’ resorts are now welcoming guests including Parrot Cay, The Regent Grand, The Regent Palms, Royal West Indies, The Sands on Grace Bay, The Somerset on Grace Bay, The Tuscany on Grace Bay, and West Bay Club. Nikki Beach Hotel will reopen by the end of September while the Grace Bay Club, Grace Bay Suites, Ocean Club Resort, Ocean Club West, and Turks & Caicos Club will reopen in October after regularly scheduled maintenance and landscaping cleanup is complete.

The Ike Disaster Relief Fund has been established to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Ike in Grand Turk, Salt Cay, South Caicos, Middle Caicos and North Caicos. Travelers and organizations interested in assisting Turks & Caicos and its people in rebuilding are encouraged to visit www.rebuildtci.com.
