An impressive 1980s house which has previously featured on Grand Designs in 2010 is on the market for $3.8 Million.
Boasting panoramic views of the Lake District, the property features seven bedrooms and a swimming pool. It sits on a property 6,500ft on a north/south axis, providing stunning views of both sunrises and sunsets.
Robert Gaukroger, owner and architectural practitioner, used the original structure and added an extension to the side and rear using renewable materials. To round off the contemporary eco home, Gaukroger used a striking geodesic roof and a stone wall to divide the two main wings of the house. Despite the costs, time and effort, Gaukroger was ardent on using geodesic techniques in order to maintain his original design.
“The roof uses the principles of a bowstring truss, it is super strong and with the turf covering keeps the house warm in winter and cool in summer,” says Gaukroger.
Drawing inspiration from Hong Kong and Germany, Gaukroger wanted a large family home that would comfortably serve three generations under one roof. He and his wife Milla experienced months of painstaking construction make their dream become a reality. The couple and their two children lived on the construction site for months, overcoming challenges such as restricted hot water and limited space.
Before Dome house is sold, guests will be able to experience the breathtaking views one last time during the summer. Sykes Holiday Cottages will manage the house as a single holiday home for rent (10 adults and four children) for weekly rental until a buyer is located.
