First Look: McLaren Artura Spider, a Hybrid Super Convertible

The new Spider welcomes a host of performance upgrades from the original Artura.

By Alex Martin

McLaren has revealed the first glimpse of the Artura Spider, its first-ever high-performance hybrid convertible. The new model, revealed alongside an updated coupe, offers significant upgrades on the original Artura that launched in 2022.

This edition benefits from more power and greater driver engagement. That extra power amounts to a combined 700 hp with McLaren engineers deriving an additional 20 hp from the same 3.0 liter V6 and E-motor powertrain. Engineers optimized the automatic eight-speed gearbox with shift speeds 25% faster than the original. There’s also an added boost for the eco-conscious with the Artura Spider capable of 21 miles in EV mode.

Another key standout is the Spider’s weight, which at a dry lightest weight of just 3,212 lbs, marks it out as the lightest convertible supercar of its class and only 137 lbs heavier than the Artura coupe.

To achieve such a modest weight gain, McLaren relied on the Artura’s original body. The roof and its mechanisms account for almost all of the additional weight. Even more impressive, the Artura Spider’s hardtop roof folds or unfolds in just 11 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph.

There is also no difference in overall performance. Both the Spider and the coupe can hit 0-60 in 3.0 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph.

Launch Control comes as standard, as does a new ‘Spinning Wheel Pull-Away’ that activates a thunderous wheelspin from a standing start, both helping to attract glances and boost Pirelli’s coffers with the new set of P Zero tires you’ll be needing.

“The new Artura is absolutely the complete next-generation supercar, whichever model you choose,” says Michael Leiters, McLaren Automotive CEO. “We have upgraded the powertrain and the chassis systems to deliver more power, more dynamic performance and even higher levels of connection with the driver – without any compromise in everyday driving.

“And now alongside the new Artura coupe we have the Artura Spider, a new convertible that has all of these improvements and brings another dimension of open-air McLaren supercar exhilaration to our range.”

The Artura Spider is available to order now at £221,500 (circa $280,000) with deliveries expected from mid-2024. All of the enhancements will be added to the Artura Coupe for 2025, while current owners of the original Artura can also get the 20-hp software boost to their current car free of charge.
