Last week saw the launch of Voltaire, a new destination venue boasting London’s largest collection of Pommery champagne and an al fresco cigar terrace.
Located in the historic Square Mile, Voltaire is named in honor of the famous French writer and philosopher who spent six years in exile in London. It is housed in a grade II listed building whose architectural features have been utilised by interior designer Sue Wheldon. As the founder of Brandarchitects, Sue certainly knows a thing or two about luxury locations, having worked with the likes of Champneys and Kempinski.
Once housing the treasures of the former bank above, the old stone vaults, individually named after Voltaire’s friends, have now been converted into a unique bar area, The Vaults at Voltaire. These feature private but spacious alcoves complete with i-pod docks and decorated in silks and furs, where guests can kick back and relax, attended to by their own private waiter.
Adjacent to The Vaults is Voltaire’s champagne bar, inspired by the colors and sensuality of caviar, champagne and cigars. Here guests can enjoy the capital’s most comprehensive selection of Pommery, the legendary champagne house which today produces what many wine writers regard as the world’s finest champagne. The menu comprises half bottles through to the nine litre Salmanazar and the classic Pommery Brut through to the vintage Cru – not forgetting the famous cuvée Louise’, named after Madame Pommery, founder of the domain and creator of the first brut champagne. Also featured is the brand’s celebrated POP range, including both the famous Union Jack and the bespoke limited edition Voltaire design. All these, together with the remainder of the collection, are displayed in a ‘Pommery Library’, forming the focal part of the bar. Voltaire also offers an extensive cocktail list, many of them Pommery based.
For those who fancy some recharging and relaxing at the bar, Voltaire has partnered with Temple Spa, the award-winning luxury aromatherapy-infused skincare range favored by many an A Lister. R‘n’R at The Volts Spa features five unique creations, all made with herbs and fruits found in Temple Spa’s range, including the comforting Repose and the confidence-boosting All Talk. Anyone ordering one of these beguiling blends will each receive a complimentary Temple Spa product to take home with them.
The final part of Voltaire’s triumvirate is an outside Parisian walkway. Leading off from the champagne bar, this incorporates the same opulent theme, with its silken awnings, outdoor chandeliers and foliage. Here guests can enjoy their choice from one of Voltaire’s extensive array of fine cigars.
