To celebrate National Tequila Day, we've selected Mexico's most exclusive tequila tastings, private distillery tours, and access to master tequileros that elevate a simple tasting into something altogether more memorable.
There is, after all, only one place to experience tequila properly. Protected by denomination of origin, the spirit can only be produced in designated regions of Mexico, with the vast majority distilled among the blue-green agave fields surrounding the town of Tequila in Jalisco. Alongside its namesake spirit, the country also produces a rich family of agave-based pours, from mezcal and raicilla to bacanora and sotol, each rooted in its own landscape and traditions.
Travelers are increasingly making the journey. Between 2019 and 2023 (the latest data available), visitor numbers to Mexico's tequila region rose 19 percent to 1.2 million, underscoring a growing appetite to discover the spirit at its source rather than simply sip it back home. With more distilleries opening their doors than ever before, these are the tastings that truly justify the journey (and perhaps the hangover in the morning).

Jose Cuervo Express
If you’re looking for the ultimate tequila experience, this is it. Heralded by agave enthusiasts from around the world, the Jose Cuervo Express invites guests aboard the self-named ‘tequila train’ for an immersive journey through the spirit’s home region of Jalisco – with all-you-can-drink tequila onboard.
Traveling from Guadalajara to the town of Tequila itself, the Jose Cuervo Express offers a plethora of onboard activities and events, from traditional Mexican cuisine and live music to guided tequila tastings and cocktail making. There are plenty of stop-offs along the way too, including a visit to the agave fields with a harvest demonstration and a guided tour through Jose Cuervo’s La Rojeña distillery.

Clase Azul Mexico La Hacienda
While Clase Azul is best known for its distinctive ceramic decanters, La Hacienda offers a chance to experience the brand beyond the bottle. Set in Jalisco, the estate combines guided tastings with behind-the-scenes access to the people and processes behind one of Mexico's most recognisable tequila houses.
Experiences include visits to the brand's ceramics workshop, where the hand-painted decanters are finished by local artisans, and the Íconos Cellar, home to some of Clase Azul's rarest and oldest expressions. Guided tastings explore the differences between the house's tequilas, from its signature Reposado to limited releases, with hosts explaining how production methods and ageing shape each pour. The visit can be rounded off at OYA, the estate's restaurant, where a seasonal menu has been designed to showcase Mexican ingredients alongside carefully selected tequila pairings.

Four Seasons Punta Mita tequila blending
On the northern coast just beyond Jalisco, in the ultra-luxe Punta Mita peninsula, guests staying at the Four Seasons Resort Punta Minta, guests are invited to immerse themselves in the history of the area with a selection of carefully curated gourmet experiences, including, you guessed it, tequila masterclasses. One of the best ways to appreciate the world of tequila at the resort is through its super exclusive tequila blending experience.
Throughout the course of the two-hour session, guests will be led through a guided tequila tasting in order to hone in on their individual preferences, while also gaining a better understanding of the spirit’s unique aromas, tastes and colors. Next, attendees are able to use their newfound knowledge to blend their very own tequila, acutely made to fit their tastes. Once blended, the tequila will be bottled in a traditional vessel, ready to be taken home to share with friends and family.

Experience Agave tequila highlands tour
If you're looking to go beyond the big-name distilleries, Experience Agave specializes in private, tailor-made journeys through Jalisco's tequila country. Rather than following a fixed itinerary, each tour can be customised around the interests of the group, whether that's historic family-run producers, traditional production methods, or behind-the-scenes access to distilleries that rarely welcome the public. There are also more standardized itineraries such as its Tequila Highlands Tour, which explores Los Altos de Jalisco, where the area's iron-rich red soil produces some of Mexico's most prized blue agave.
Over four days, guests visit a handpicked selection of distilleries — including names such as El Pandillo, Siete Leguas and Vivanco — meeting the families behind them and learning about everything from traditional tahona stone milling to fermentation, distillation and barrel ageing through private tastings and production tours. To elevate its standard distillery tour to new heights of exclusivity, La Rojeña has launched an immersive Maestro Dobel Tequila tasting and blending experience that invites participants to create their own personalized spirit. Kicking off with a tour through the cellar and the distillery, the experience gives guests an unrivaled insight into the tequila-making process.
Armed with their newfound knowledge, participants will then be guided through an expert tasting of the Maestro Dobel line, including blanco, reposado, and añejo tequila, before being invited to help a master blender create their own tequila. When the perfect blend has been achieved, it will be poured into a one-liter damajuana ready to be taken away and enjoyed at home. While the experience is offered as a public tour and tasting, those looking for a more intimate event can book privately for a group size of their choosing.
