The St. Regis Toronto’s general manager, Daniel Newberry, speaks to Elite Traveler about the hospitality industry and what makes him tick at work.
What attracted you to a career in hospitality and to your position at the hotel?
What attracted me to a career in hospitality – and ultimately to my role at the hotel – was the opportunity to create meaningful, memorable experiences for people. Hospitality is one of the few industries where you have the ability to shape how someone feels in a lasting way, whether they are traveling for business, celebrating a milestone, or simply seeking comfort and connection. At its core, I’ve always been inspired by the idea of creating lifelong memories for our guests moments that stay with them well beyond their stay and become part of their personal story. That ability to turn everyday interactions into something truly special is what makes this profession so fulfilling.
I’ve also been drawn to environments that are dynamic, people-focused, and require both creativity and precision. Over time, I found great purpose in building high-performing teams, fostering a culture where colleagues feel valued and inspired, and delivering exceptional results through service excellence. My position at the hotel was compelling because of the brand’s legacy, the level of luxury and personalization we deliver, and the opportunity to lead a team deeply committed to excellence. It allows me to bring together my passion for people, performance, and creating extraordinary, lasting experiences.
What defines true luxury in hospitality today, and how does your hotel embody that?
True luxury in hospitality today is less about opulence alone and more about personalization, authenticity, and how seamlessly we anticipate and fulfill our guests’ needs. It is defined by the ability to create effortless, emotionally resonant experiences, where every interaction feels intuitive, every detail is intentional, and every guest feels genuinely recognized and valued. At its core, modern luxury is about time, trust, and memory-making. Guests are seeking not just a beautiful space, but a sense of belonging, privacy, and experiences that are tailored to them and that create lasting, lifelong memories. At our hotel, we embody this through a combination of highly personalized service, a deeply engaged team, and a commitment to excellence in every touchpoint. From our signature St. Regis rituals to bespoke guest experiences and anticipatory service delivered by our hosts and butlers, we focus on understanding each guest’s preferences and exceeding expectations in meaningful ways.
Equally important is the culture behind the experience. We invest in creating an environment where our team feels empowered, inspired, and connected to our purpose, because incredible guest experiences start with an exceptional team. This alignment allows us to consistently deliver a level of service that feels both elevated and genuinely human. Ultimately, we define luxury not just by what we provide, but by how we make our guests feel and the lasting impression we leave well beyond their stay.
What’s one detail in your hotel that guests might overlook but you’re proud of?
One detail that many guests might overlook, but that I am particularly proud of, is the spectacular ceiling mural at LOUIX LOUIS. In fact, The St. Regis Toronto is the only St. Regis property in the world with a commissioned mural of this scale adorning the restaurant ceiling. The artwork, titled Bouquet of Whisky, was created by Toronto artist Madison van Rijn and was inspired by the movement of whisky swirling in a glass. The mural pays tribute to Toronto’s rich distillery heritage and the restaurant’s deep connection to the world of dark spirits.
The story behind the design is especially meaningful because LOUIX LOUIS is home to more than 500 dark spirits, making it one of the largest collections in North America. The amber-toned swirls and hand-applied gold accents evoke the colour, texture, and elegance of Canadian whisky, creating a visual experience that reflects the restaurant’s identity. Another hidden gem is The LOFT, our semi-private event space overlooking the restaurant and Grand Bar. It offers guests an intimate vantage point from which to appreciate both the energy of the dining room and the beauty of the space below, making it one of the most unique settings in the hotel.
What exciting plans do you have for the hotel that you can share with our readers?
We have several exciting initiatives underway that will further elevate the guest experience at The St. Regis Toronto. One of our key focuses is enhancing our signature St. Regis Butler Service through a more curated suite experience. Guests staying in our suites will enjoy an even more personalized level of care, from bespoke welcome amenities and morning beverage service to complimentary garment pressing and thoughtful packing and unpacking assistance. These touches allow our guests to settle in effortlessly and enjoy the attentive, anticipatory service that defines the St. Regis brand.
We are also investing in the evolution of our food and beverage offerings at LOUIX LOUIS. Building on our reputation as home to one of North America’s most impressive dark spirits collections, we are revamping our beverage program through collaborations with world-class distilleries and premium partners who share our commitment to craftsmanship and excellence. These partnerships will introduce exclusive experiences, curated tastings, and innovative cocktails that celebrate the depth and artistry of whisky and other dark spirits. Ultimately, our goal is to create even more memorable, personalized moments for our guests, whether through the refined service of a St. Regis Butler or an exceptional evening at LOUIX LOUIS discovering something new from our extensive spirits collection.
What separates this suite from anything else on offer in the region?
What truly sets this suite apart is the combination of exceptional space, residential-style design, and the highly personalized service that defines the St. Regis experience. From the moment guests arrive, they are welcomed by our renowned St. Regis Butler Service, which delivers a level of attentive, anticipatory care that is increasingly rare in today’s luxury landscape. From personalized arrival experiences and morning beverage service to garment pressing and packing or unpacking assistance, every detail is tailored to the individual guest, creating a stay that feels effortless and deeply personal. The suite itself is designed to feel like a sophisticated private residence in the heart of Toronto, offering generous living and entertaining spaces that provide both comfort and privacy. What makes the John Jacob Astor Suite especially unique is its versatility.
Beyond serving as an extraordinary accommodation, it can also transform into an intimate venue for private events, executive gatherings, and exclusive celebrations. A standout feature is its private dining room, complemented by a dedicated kitchen and separate staff entrance, allowing for seamless and discreet service. This flexible setup creates opportunities for bespoke experiences tailored to each guest’s preferences, whether that means an intimate dinner, a private culinary experience, or a customized gathering designed around a special occasion.
What is the most elaborate request from someone staying in the suite, and how did your team deliver it?
One of our most memorable guests stayed with us for more than 200 nights over the course of a year, and her stay became a wonderful example of what personalized luxury truly means. She had very specific preferences, particularly when it came to dining. Rather than simply accommodating her requests, our team took the time to understand what would make her feel most comfortable and at home.
Eventually, she began bringing some of her own ingredients, and our culinary team worked closely with her to create customized dishes that weren’t on any menu. As she was originally from Bangladesh, it was especially meaningful that one of our kitchen team members shared the same heritage and could prepare authentic dishes that reflected the flavors she grew up with. Her attention to detail extended to even the smallest aspects of her stay. She had precise preferences for her snacks, right down to the exact number of cashews she wanted, a perfectly prepared boiled egg, and the specific way it should be cooked and presented. These details may seem small, but to us they represented an opportunity to demonstrate genuine care.
What made the experience so special was the collaboration across departments. Our chefs, butlers, and service teams all worked together to anticipate her needs and personalize every aspect of her stay. By the end of her residency, we weren’t simply fulfilling requests; we had created a true home away from home. That level of attentiveness and commitment to individual preferences is what we believe defines the St. Regis experience.
