A stand-out retreat on the banks of Ontario’s Lake Rousseau, JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort & Spa has beckoned travelers seeking a taste of Canada’s rural luxury since 2008. Managing director Didier Dolivet shares what makes the resort tick.
What attracted you to a career in hospitality and to your position at the hotel?
Hospitality appealed to me early on because it blends human connection with disciplined execution. It is one of the few industries where emotional intelligence, operational rigor, and financial performance must coexist in harmony. I am deeply motivated by the opportunity to create environments where people feel genuinely cared for, while simultaneously running a business that is resilient, profitable, and forward‑thinking.
Leading the first JW Marriott in Canada, and the only JW Marriott resort outside of an urban setting, was particularly compelling. This role allows me to bring JW’s principles of mindfulness, wellbeing, and intentional luxury to life in a setting defined by nature. The combination of brand prestige, an extraordinary landscape, and the freedom to innovate makes this position both a privilege and a responsibility I take very seriously. Our success is also rooted in the vision and support of American Niagara Hospitality, whose ownership understands that enduring luxury requires long‑term investment, trusted leadership, and thoughtful evolution. Their mentorship and belief in continuous improvement have been instrumental in shaping the resort into what it is becoming today.
What is a typical day like for you? Any routines or rituals that help you stay on top of things?
My days are structured but never rigid. I begin early, prioritizing physical movement and moments of stillness, whether it’s a walk outdoors or quiet reflection, to ensure clarity and focus. Maintaining mental and physical wellbeing is essential to sustained leadership, especially in a demanding industry like hospitality. Professionally, I divide my time between strategic oversight and being present on property. Seasonality plays a major role in our operations, so my days often involve anticipating what is coming next – training teams, refining experiences, and preparing the resort well ahead of each transition.
I review key performance indicators daily, with a strong focus on ADR, ROI, and guest sentiment, but I also make a point of engaging directly with our associates and guests. Those conversations provide invaluable insight beyond any report. My goal each day is alignment: ensuring our team understands the ‘why’ behind decisions while staying agile, thoughtful, and guest‑centric in everything we do.
Tell us about a defining moment in your role, such as a memorable guest experience or a challenging period.
Many defining moments happen quietly, behind the scenes. Hosting high‑profile guests and celebrities is one such example. These stays require extraordinary preparation – from personal security considerations to strict dietary requirements – and absolute discretion. Planning these moments is highly structured, but witnessing their execution is deeply rewarding. When every department performs in harmony, it feels like watching a symphonic orchestra come together for one purpose.
Equally defining is watching people grow. Seeing team members develop into leaders, knowing I have contributed to their journey, is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my role. While it is bittersweet to see some leave for new opportunities, it is also a sign of success. Supported by ownership that believes in people and progress, we have cultivated a culture where talent is nurtured and encouraged to evolve.
What defines true luxury in hospitality today, and how does your hotel embody that?
True luxury today is intentional, intuitive, and deeply personal. It is no longer about abundance alone, but about relevance, anticipating needs, creating emotional ease, and allowing guests to feel genuinely present. Our resort embodies this through a balance of thoughtful design, heartfelt service, and experiences rooted in nature. Everything we offer is curated with purpose, from wellness programming to culinary experiences that emphasize quality and connection.
Importantly, we view luxury through both an emotional and financial lens. Sustainable luxury must deliver meaningful experiences and demonstrate long‑term return, through loyalty, advocacy, and operational excellence. This disciplined approach ensures that luxury here is not only felt, but enduring. With the support of American Niagara Hospitality, we continue to invest strategically – renovating, innovating, and evolving – so luxury here remains relevant, sustainable, and deeply felt.
What principles help you and your team maintain flawless five-star service?
Preparation, anticipation, and empathy are fundamental. Five‑star service begins long before the guest arrives. We invest heavily in training, ensuring our teams are confident, aligned, and empowered to adapt to different guest profiles throughout the seasons. Equally important is creating an environment where associates feel supported and inspired. A mindful team delivers mindful service. I take great pride in seeing leaders emerge from within our organization. Being part of their professional journey – and witnessing their growth – is incredibly rewarding.
Supported by ownership that values people as much as performance, we have built a culture where excellence is natural, not forced. When teams feel valued and prepared, service becomes intuitive, authentic, and memorable.
All about the hotel
What’s one detail in your hotel that guests might overlook but you’re proud of?
One often‑overlooked detail is the intentional pacing of the guest journey, from arrival to departure. Guests rarely notice the complexity of seasonal transitions, yet these moments represent some of our greatest achievements. Converting the resort from one season to another requires months of planning, training, and coordination across all departments. From adapting experiences and amenities to shifting guest expectations, these transitions must feel effortless to the guest. That seamlessness is something I am immensely proud of. It reflects not only our team’s dedication, but also an ownership vision that supports proactive planning rather than reactive change.
How does your location inspire the guest experience?
Our location is fundamental to everything we do. Set near Lake Rosseau and surrounded by untouched natural beauty, the resort invites guests to slow down organically. Nature becomes both a setting and a guide, shaping how guests move, rest, dine, and reflect. This landscape enables us to create experiences that support mindfulness without feeling prescriptive, lakeside rituals, outdoor wellness, and moments of solitude or connection, depending on the guest’s needs. From a strategic standpoint, our location also differentiates us globally. It offers the reassurance of a trusted luxury brand in an environment that feels grounding and deeply restorative.
What exciting plans do you have for the hotel?
Our evolution is driven by thoughtful investment and purpose. Recent enhancements include refreshed guestrooms, the introduction of the Dan Aykroyd Icebar, and the launch of HydroSpa – Wellness by Water, all made possible through close collaboration with American Niagara Hospitality. Most recently, our partnership with Live Inc. has introduced live music experiences across the resort and region. Performances by artists such as Bachman & Bachman, Brett Kissel, Jim Cuddy, Steven Page, Trans‑Canada Highwaymen, Honeymoon Suite, and others bring cultural depth to the guest experience. These initiatives reflect our belief that luxury should be dynamic, emotional, and culturally engaging.
What unique experience does your hotel offer that no one else can replicate?
What truly sets us apart is the convergence of JW Marriott’s global luxury standards with an immersive, nature led resort experience, paired with an exceptionally diverse portfolio of culinary, wellness, and lifestyle offerings. As the first JW Marriott in Canada and the only non urban JW resort, our positioning is genuinely singular.
Guests can experience refined dining at Teca and Muskoka Chophouse, unwind at the HydroSpa with treatments inspired by water and wellness, or enjoy a playful yet elevated moment at the iconic Dan Aykroyd Icebar. In the summer, our resort transforms into a curated luxury playground, featuring pop-up experiences and activations with renowned brands such as Porsche Canada, Holt Renfrew, Veuve Clicquot, and others, bringing global luxury brands into a distinctly Muskoka setting. This ability to blend mindful restoration, high touch service, and dynamic brand collaborations, within a serene natural environment, creates an experience that simply cannot be replicated elsewhere.

What separates this suite from anything else on offer in the region?
The Two‑Bedroom Executive Suite sets itself apart through its rare combination of scale, flexibility, and elevated residential comfort – something rarely found in the Muskoka region. At up to nearly 1,300 sq ft, the suite is designed to accommodate larger families or groups without compromising privacy or refinement. Two generous bedrooms, multiple sleeping options, two full marble bathrooms, and a fully appointed kitchen create a true ‘home‑within‑a‑resort’ experience. What truly distinguishes the suite is its ability to support both connection and retreat. Guests can gather in the separate living and dining areas, enjoy time on the terrace or balcony, then retreat to private sleeping quarters. This balance, paired with JW Marriott service and surroundings, offers a level of versatility and sophistication that is unmatched in the region.
How does the suite’s design reflect the essence of your hotel?
The design of the suite mirrors the spirit of JW Marriott Muskoka: refined, intentional, and deeply connected to place. Natural materials, warm textures, and a thoughtful layout reflect the calm elegance of the surrounding landscape while providing all the comforts of a luxury residence. The suite encourages presence and ease. Open living spaces invite gathering, while the bedrooms offer quiet retreat – mirroring the rhythm of the resort itself. Large windows and outdoor access allow nature to remain central to the experience, reinforcing our philosophy of mindful luxury. At its core, the design is purposeful rather than extravagant. Every element, from furnishings to functionality, serves to support rest, connection, and restoration. It is a space that feels polished yet relaxed, sophisticated without being formal, and entirely aligned with our hotel’s ethos.
Is there an extravagant feature in the suite that guests rave about?
What guests often fall in love with is not a single statement piece, but the feeling of space, ease, and quiet indulgence the suite provides. The expansive living and dining areas invite guests to slow down and truly settle in, whether that means lingering over a meal, gathering by the fireplace in the evening, or simply enjoying the comfort of being together without feeling confined.
The fully equipped kitchen adds a layer of understated luxury, offering the freedom to entertain, host family breakfasts, or enjoy private moments without leaving the suite. Paired with two marble bathrooms featuring deep soaking tubs and generous vanities, the experience becomes both indulgent and effortless. Luxury here is lived‑in elegance. Guests appreciate that everything has been considered, allowing the suite to feel less like a hotel and more like a beautifully appointed private residence in Muskoka.
