The $68m Brutalist Beverly Hills Fortress of a Fashion Mogul

Property of the week: Trading sunglasses for supervillain lairs, we look inside the home of the Oakley founder.

By Ellys Woodhouse

A Bond villain-style lair may be something straight out of Hollywood, but you don’t expect to see one perched high in the exclusive neighborhood of Trousdale Estates in Beverly Hills: Enter 410 Trousdale Pl.

Who would live in such a place, a media mogul or tech magnate, perhaps? Only villainous in its aesthetics, this home has clearly been the result of a designer’s eye, and by none other than the founder of Oakley, James Jannard.

Just a mere few weeks after the record-breaking sale of his Malibu mansion for $210m – surpassing Jay-Z and Beyoncé to claim the title of California‘s most expensive residential real estate sale ever – the sunglass mogul has listed another mammoth property. This time, Jannard has listed his Beverly Hills cement compound for $68m, sold through Knight Frank and Douglas Elliman.

Jannard purchased the two-acre site in Trousdale Estates in the foothills of the Santa Monica mountains in 2009 for just short of $20m, with the futuristic fortress finished in 2016. Resting on one of Beverly Hills’s highest points, the luxurious neighborhood offers a sweeping view of Los Angeles and easy access to Sunset Boulevard.

The five-bedroom, 10-bathroom property took five years to complete, and anyone familiar with Oakley’s futuristic and structural sunglasses designs can see its founder’s touch across the home’s brutalist design. The cement, aluminum and glass manse is a radical rejection from any of the other structures in the neighborhood – or any other structures in the galaxy, for that matter.

Enter the property through the imposing Stonehenge-like motor court and you’re met with a residence that is as much an art piece as it is a home. The lower level of the house greets you with a cavernous great room, featuring poured concrete walls, aluminum ceilings and all-metal fixtures. The brutalist design extends throughout, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls that retract into the ground, allowing for seamless indoor-outdoor living and offering unobstructed views of the city below.

Moving through the ground floor, the estate boasts a state-of-the-art theater, a full bar and a gourmet kitchen equipped with top-of-the-line appliances. A second, more extensive kitchen is also present, catering to large-scale entertaining. The lower level also includes a gym, an elevator and a wine cellar, ensuring that every luxury is at the homeowner’s fingertips.

The upper levels of the property are equally impressive. The residence includes five bedrooms, each designed with a stark, industrial aesthetic that contrasts with the warmth of wood floors and abundant natural light. The primary suite is a sanctuary of its own, offering unparalleled views of the Los Angeles skyline and a spa-like bathroom.

Outside, the property is designed for grand entertaining. The infinity pool, surrounded by expansive lounge areas, offers a breathtaking perspective of the city and ocean beyond.
