Sky Villas at Battersea Power Station: An Iconic Landmark Reborn

Property of the Week: The apartments sit between the Grade II listed building’s striking white chimneys.

By Irenie Forshaw

In 1983, Battersea Power Station shuttered its doors. Once the third largest generator in the UK, supplying a fifth of London’s electricity, the iconic landmark stood empty and fell into disrepair for over three decades until Malaysia’s SP Setia and Sime Darby Property stepped in to develop the site. Now, the Grade II listed building has reopened with an array of restaurants, bars, offices and apartments, including 18 ultra-exclusive Sky Villas.

Situated on the south bank of the River Thames in Nine Elms, Battersea, the development is the latest project helping to breathe a fresh lease of life into the London borough. Last September, the new Battersea Power Station tube station opened on the Northern Line and today it seems like hardly a week goes by without another luxury development popping up in the area.

The 42-acre Battersea Power Station development is home to 254 apartments, divided into three neighborhoods: Switch House West, Switch House East, and, right at the top, Boiler House Square, where the Sky Villas are nestled between the building’s striking white chimneys.

Among this coveted collection of apartments is Sky Villa 32 – a three-bedroom duplex, which is currently being sold by Knightfrank for a cool £8.5m (approx. $9.52m). Spanning 2,369 sq ft and boasting sweeping vistas of the London skyline and River Thames, it’s about to become one of the capital’s hottest properties.

Set across two floors, the sprawling apartment boasts its own private garden, balcony and roof terrace – the perfect setting to take in the stunning views. London-based design firm Michaelis Boyd was brought in for the elegant interiors, effortlessly blending old and new to create a timeless feel.

Decorated in shades of beige, white and gray, the luxurious apartment is dotted with comfy sofas, soft woven rugs, and bespoke wooden furnishings. Floor-to-ceiling windows bathe the interiors in natural light, letting the views take center stage; from the moment you arrive it’s impossible to imagine you are anywhere but London.

Beyond the apartment itself, the Sky Villas at Battersea Power Station also benefit from a host of amenities including a gym, sauna, jacuzzi, swimming pool, 1,500-sq-ft health and fitness center and 24-hour concierge team. Future owners will also enjoy access to a beautiful communal garden and private residents’ club complete with a bar, private dining room, cinema and library.

“Battersea Power Station is a development like no other,” said Tom Rundall, partner at Knightfrank. “The creative vision of Sime Darby Property and SP Setia is bringing to life the once neglected former power station into a thriving 42-acre community, at the heart of which is Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s iconic Grade II listed art deco masterpiece – the Power Station – reimagined by Wilkinson Eyre architects.”
