How to Enjoy America’s Cup 2024 in Barcelona

The America’s Cup is a true spectacle, here’s how you can enjoy it from land, sea or air.

By Toby Louch

It’s been over three years since the last glorious rendition of the America’s Cup. Thankfully the wait, for what is arguably one of the most prestigious events on the global sporting calendar, is nearly over with the 37th rendition of the America’s Cup hitting the shores of Barcelona this August.

In the America’s Cup, two teams face off to see who will be crowned victorious and take home the coveted ‘Auld Mug’. The defender (the previous winner) competes against a challenger, with the challenger being decided during the Challenger Selections Series, which occurs just before the America’s Cup.

This year in Barcelona, the defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, will be competing against either INEOS Britannia, Alinghi Red Bull Racing, NYYC American Magic, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli or Orient Express Racing Team. The Challenger Selection Series takes place from August 29-October 7, while the official America’s Cup will be decided between October 12 and October 27.

Consisting of five different events, the America’s Cup is a true feast for the eyes for both sailing aficionados and novices alike. But what’s the best way to soak up all that action? We have drafted together some tips and pointers, to ensure your experience at the 37th America’s Cup is nothing but plain sailing.

Stay at the heart of the action

The great city of Barcelona is awash with superb five-star hotels but for the America’s Cup, one in particular rises to the top. W Barcelona is an iconic building in a city of iconic buildings, but it’s the hotel’s location that ensures it’s the finest choice to catch all the action. Built on reclaimed land attached to Barcelona’s port, W Barcelona has front-row seats for this year’s event.

Situated less than a mile away from the race village, you could not be closer to hospitality. In theory, you wouldn’t even need to leave the hotel with various terraces and rooftop bars giving you a presiding view over the action.

Take to the sea

Don’t leave the sailing to the pros. One of the best ways to enjoy the America’s Cup is from the water itself and in Barcelona there are plenty of options to choose from. The racing occurs on a set course that is surrounded by a ‘Racecourse perimeter,’ and there are set spots along this perimeter dedicated to yachts and small craft.

Superyacht owners should look to BWA Yachting, the event’s Exclusive Superyacht Program Delivery Partner. BWA Yachting is responsible for managing superyacht berth bookings in addition to access to VIP experiences, like access to the AC Club hospitality.

If you don’t own a vessel perhaps chartering is the best option. Sail & Charter is the Official Boat Partner of America’s Cup and has a wide selection of vessels bookable so you can get as close as possible to the action.

A bird’s eye view

Perhaps the best way to experience the event in its totality is the America’s Cup 350 Card, which gives visitors a taste of land, sea and air. The card includes a sailing tour along the port past all the team bases, a short helicopter flight over the course, a walking tour of the waterfront and race village, and access to the multimedia exhibition.

If you’re only in Barcelona for the day, the America’s Cup 360 Card could be the best way to see it all. Those looking to add extra luxury to the experience can upgrade their package with hospitality access in addition to boat charters.
