Situated in the Lower Hudson Valley region of the Catskills Mountains, just two hours from New York City, The Chatwal Lodge has carved out a reputation as the perfect bolthole to escape the stresses of everyday life. Now, the secluded retreat has opened three new treehouses, giving guests a unique chance to fully immerse themselves in the beautiful surroundings.
The Chatwal Lodge – sister property to New York’s esteemed The Chatwal – is already home to 11 suites and cottages, dotted throughout the historic Chapin Estate – a former 18,000-acre wildlife reserve.
Hovering 15 feet above the ground, the new treehouses have been designed to blend seamlessly in with the forest canopy. Each treehouse can host up to four guests, split across the king-size bedroom on the main level and the queen Murphy bed in the loft.

Enormous windows bathe the interiors in natural light, revealing sweeping views of the Toronto Reservoir. Like the other accommodations at The Chatwal Lodge, the treehouses are pared-back and cozy, in warm, earthy hues. Eclectic furnishings have been carefully chosen from the petrified wood and mango root tables to the live-edge teak wood slabs.
Ideal for those visiting in larger groups, or with the entire family, the treehouses at The Chatwal Lodge feature comfy living rooms, expansive showers with heated floors, covered balconies and outdoor decks complete with gas fire pits. And, while they might appear rustic at first glance, The Chatwal Lodge has ensured a touch of luxury with thoughtful extra details like the Malin & Goetz bath products and fully stocked mini-bar.
“The inspiration behind The Chatwal Lodge’s treehouses stemmed from taking the humble idea of a treehouse, which effectively is a ‘room perched in tree canopy’, but elevating to the realm of luxury,” said Robert Mallia, head of architecture and construction, Dream Hotels at Hyatt. “In keeping with the rest of the unique accommodations at the property, the calming design of these treehouses cultivates an effortless escape that is enveloped by nature.”
When guests can bring themselves to step foot outside, there is plenty to do at The Chatwal Lodge from fly fishing and forest bathing to snowshoeing and duckpin bowling. The hotel is also slated to open a gleaming new pool and spa in 2024.
