Iconic New York Hotel The Surrey Reopens as a Corinthia

Following an extensive renovation, the historic hotel has reopened just in time for its 100th anniversary in 2026.

By Toby Louch

Since it first opened almost 100 years ago in 1926, The Surrey became a beacon of the New York hotel scene. Its placement in the sought-after Upper East Side neighborhood, only steps away from 5th Avenue and Central Park, was ideal. And so flocked presidents, royals and celebrities alike. Even so, the supposedly bankrupt property closed in 2020 before reportedly being acquired by the Reuben Brothers for $150m. Four years later and following an extensive renovation, just in time for the 100th anniversary, The Surrey has reopened under the stewardship of Corinthia Hotels.

The reopening marks an important milestone for Corinthia Hotels as the first foray into the North American market for a brand that has been expanding in recent years and is understandably planning on cementing itself on this side of the Atlantic.

Over the last four years, New York’s The Surrey has been entirely transformed, bringing an updated design and the ultra-level of luxury that Corinthia is known for to the Upper East Side. Interiors have been handed by Martin Brudnizki of MBDS, with the property now home to 70 guest rooms, 30 suites and 14 private residences.

“The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel, has tapped leading visionaries in dining, spa, design and architecture to bring a sense of vibrancy to Manhattan’s Upper East Side,” said Pradeep Raman, managing director of The Surrey. “We aim to be a cultural mainstay of our neighborhood and add to the dynamic and ever-evolving tapestry of fashion, creativity and art that surrounds us.”

In addition to its all-new design, The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel, also brings an exciting new restaurant opening and spa to this exclusive corner of Manhattan.

“We are incredibly proud to have our first opening in North America be one as meaningful as The Surrey, an address that has been lying in wait for its next chapter,” said Simon Casson, chief executive officer of Corinthia Hotels. “We see this hotel as a love letter to New York and a beacon of the city’s creative spirit. As we embark on global growth, The Surrey is in many ways a new flagship, representative of the warm familial spirit of Corinthia that makes all guests feel perfectly at home.”

Design

The classic hotel’s redesign was led by London and New York-based team MBDS, which looked to combine ‘past influences and contemporary sophistication’. The result is a property that conveys a distinctly residential feel and is awash with detailing that feels distinctly New York: think Murano chandeliers and bespoke furniture pieces.

Looking at specific rooms, the hotel’s suites were inspired by the bridges in New York’s iconic Central Park, featuring the likes of the Bethesda Grandeur Suite, Pine Banke Bridge Suite, Greywacke Heritage Suite and The Surrey Suite. These luxurious abodes feature unique design elements that directly link to their namesake. Crown moldings are utilized to reflect the architectural style of the bridges, while illustrations of the bridges can be discovered inside the suite’s grand armoire.

Each suite includes sizable living spaces – ideal for guests looking to escape New York’s busy streets for a short while – in addition to Corinthia’s complimentary, dedicated butler service, aiding guests in enjoying their stay in an exceptionally personalized way.

Alongside the extensive renovation, a brand-new restaurant has arrived at The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel. Famed Miami haunt, Casa Tua is debuting its first New York location at the hotel as its exclusive food and beverage partner.

Founded by Miky and Leticia Herrera-Grandene, Casa Tua blends both the food and vibe of Italy and the wider Mediterranean to create an ambiance that is at once homely, yet sophisticated.

The restaurant was designed by Italian architect Michele Bonan who has incorporated both modern touches, in addition to elements from his native city of Florence including custom Italian furniture and an art collection hand-selected by Miky and Leticia. In much the same vein at Casa Tua Miami, on the hotel’s second floor, visitors will find a Casa Tua private members club.

There is also The Lounge by Casa Tua that offers an all-day menu, featuring light bites as well as coffee and cocktails.

Spa

The renovation of New York’s Surrey Hotel is completed with a new spa, developed in close collaboration with Sisley Paris. Sisley – the highly regarded French luxury lifestyle brand – has specific expertise in the field of phyto-cosmetology, the combination of plant-based ingredients and the latest science, with this approach playing a significant role in the spa’s development.

At The Surrey Spa, the focus of treatments will be on rejuvenation, Anti-ageing and relaxation. Of course, Sisley products are used throughout these treatments, while the Surrey Hotel is the only location to offer the exclusive Black Rose Re-plumping Facial.

Guests visiting The Surrey Spa will discover two treatment rooms, a steam room, sauna, salt relaxation room, sensorial shower, and an AMP-designed gym, in addition to a secluded outdoor terrace.
