Thailand’s Evason Phuket Goes Green With Luxury

By Pardhasaradhi Gonuguntla

PHUKET, THAILAND — Luxury in the famous Thai resort of Phuket is set to meet green. The 260-room Evason Phuket is set to become the first resort in Asia to implement a bio-mass system as an alternative energy source, according to the hotel company.

The cutting-edge installation will operate on plant material only, which is harvested from the 64 acres, or 26 hectares, of tropical parkland in which the resort is set. The energy system will have the capability of running a 20-ton absorption chiller air-conditioning unit, which will fully service the storage areas at the resort’s heart-of-the-house. These areas have been recently consolidated to further increase energy and manpower efficiency.

Using 140 kilograms of organic rubbish per day, the system has in part been funded by DANIDA, the Danish Embassy Supporting Programme Institute.

Making further use of the resort’s spacious lush grounds, popular Into The Beach, which features a new menu focused on seafood, and panoramic views out to the Andaman Sea, is being expanded and refurbished to take the it through into the next decade. It can now handle private groups of more than 200 persons, supporting the popularity that the restaurant and location has achieved.

Together with Capital Hotels and Meridia Capital, Six Senses Resorts & Spas, operator of Evason Phuket, recently acquired all the outstanding shares of the property, thus enabling a programme of upgrading to be accelerated. Whilst not altering the room count, additional infrastructure and property upgrading will now take effect. For example, all over-ground electrical cabling was recently moved underground, increasing safety while enhancing the property’s landscape esthetics. Quiet and non-polluting electric vehicles are being phased in to replace the iconic tramcars which use conventional fuel, another initiative that will result in Evason Phuket achieving carbon neutral status – en route to being carbon free.
