There’s an exciting transformation unfolding in Milan and the spotlight is on Dorchester Collection, the historic hotel overlooking Piazza del Repubblica has seen the redesign of its lobby and bar by famed architect Thierry Despont, of its Imperial Suite by interior designer Celeste dell’Anna, and the addition of nine new Principe suites designed by London-based architect Francesca Basu.
Renowned New York designer Thierry Despont is reinvigorating all the public areas of the hotel. The lobby, known as Il Salotto, is now much brighter, creating a thoroughly welcoming entrance. Upon arrival, guests and well-heeled Milanese find a promenade lounge to the right, convenient for enjoying an aperitif while settled into sumptuous Italian furniture. For immediate impact, Despont has added classical paintings by famous artists such as Luca Giordano and a spectacular custom-made Murano glass chandelier by Barovier and Toso.
Despont’s vision is also touching the Principe Bar, making it more vibrant and engaging while retaining original features such as beautiful marble and wood panelling. The designer has created a perfect balance between the classical and innovative styles of the Principe di Savoia. The centerpiece of the bar will be a custom-made banquette that will “wrap around” a grand piano, resulting an intimate space for musical soirees and confirming the Bar is the spot to see and be seen in Milan.

The redesign of the Imperial Suite by Celeste dell’Anna combines contemporary and classical elements as well. The 230 square-meter suite boasts a large sitting room with a handcrafted mini-bar console and crocodile-skin writing desk. Striking paintings interpreting contemporary masterpieces have been specially created by Celeste dell’Anna. In the bedroom, a four-poster bed is swathed in the richest fabrics, and a large walk-in wardrobe is a welcoming setting for purchases from the nearby shopping district. Among many highlights of the Imperial Suite is a Turkish bath with chrome-therapy system, massage shower and special makeup console to encourage complete relaxation – a luxury taken very seriously at Hotel Principe di Savoia.
Meanwhile, the hotel has introduced nine new Principe suites designed by London-based architect Francesca Basu. Each mosaic suite is appointed with hand-painted frescoes, traditional Italian furniture, and deep-purple armchairs and floor lamps that create a welcoming ambience. Large sitting rooms have been furnished with sumptuous sofas and colorful Murano glass vases on Lombardy-style tables, while stunning bathrooms are spacious and light, equipped with center-situated Lasa marble baths and showers adorned with striking handmade glass mosaics.
