But it wasn’t until American designer Max Azria took the reins in 2007, relaunching the label with his own designs, that Hervé Léger achieved its current cult status.

Always working with the body-conscious bandage dress in mind, each new season at Hervé Léger is akin to reinventing the wheel for Azria. On February 14, the designer presented the fall 2010 collection during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York—and while the line’s devotees can always expect a signature look, Azria still managed to make it feel fresh.

Adding cross-laced panels to slinky dresses, bodices and skirts could have easily veered into bondage territory, but instead felt refreshingly sporty. A black neoprene jacket, when paired with a mesh body suit and rubber-print pants, took on the look of ultra-chic scuba gear. Though the palette was overall neutral, blending creams, greys and lots of black, hints of metallic sheen and shots of neon green and pink were woven throughout to add interest.

It seems the asymmetrical trend is here to stay for at least another season, as several of the most red carpet-worthy dresses featured a structured one-shoulder shape. And in the midst of all that athleticism, Azria used soft pleating and curved flanges at the hips to keep the femme factor high—a touch that his many glamazon fans, among them Victoria Beckham and Kate Hudson, will surely appreciate.
