Puerto Penasco, Mexico – Reported by Elite Traveler, the Private Jet Lifestyle Magazine
Grupo Mayan, a luxury hotel chain in Puerto Penasco, has just announced the opening of Mexico’s first privately-built airport, Mar de Cortes International. Located on the five-star Mayan Palace resort, the new airport will allow travelers to jet in for the weekend and practically step off of their plane and onto the beach. In preparation for the spring fishing season, the resort will cater to guests by arranging world-class fishing charters and expeditions.
Providing visitors with an all-access pass to “the world’s aquarium,” Puerto Penasco also offers some of the best fishing on the Pacific. Now thanks to the Mar de Cortes International airport, this hot vacation destination is easily accessible as well.
Prior to the airport’s construction, travel to Puerto Penasco was difficult: Air service was limited to aircraft that could land on unimproved fields, keeping the number of visitors low. The airport features an 8,200-foot concrete runway and is capable of handling Boeing 737’s and 757’s and other similar aircraft. Two taxiways accommodate three aircraft on the aprons, while L861 lighting on the runway, PAPI’s visual aids and wind cones ensure safe take-offs and landings.
Now for a limited time, Mayan Palace will be offering stays to private pilots who land at Mar de Cortes International.
