Liberty Barcelona has teamed up with Döttling, the German safe manufactory, to create a safe inspired by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Barcelona Chair. Reflecting the ‘birth year’ of the Barcelona Chair, 1929, the Liberty Barcelona is being produced in a limited edition of 29 safes.
The Barcelona Chair was conceived for the German pavilion of the World’s Fair in Barcelona, to serve as the seating for the Spanish royal couple during the building’s opening ceremony. The combination of materials used—stainless steel and leather – is also used for the Liberty Barcelona by Döttling. All fittings are made from high-gloss polished stainless steel.
The body of the safe has a covering made of fine calfskin. A state-of-the-art electronic lock protects the interior, which houses 12 precision watch winders and three drawers. One of these drawers is equipped with ten watch cushions. A range of interior fittings and colors are available on request.
The Liberty Barcelona is constructed in the dimensions 100 cm x 63 cm x 53 cm (H x W x D) and is available in the German and European insurance classes VdS/EN 1 to VdS/EN 3. For customers with even higher security requirements, the safe is available up to class 5. The starting weight of the Barcelona Liberty is 300 kg.
Döttling was founded in Maichingen, Germany, in 1919 and continues to handcraft safes for select clients. The Döttling craftsmen use traditional locksmith’s techniques inherited from the Royal Prussian smiths, including 24-carat gold plating. As well as restoring antique safes, the company has produced new models including The Bell-Air and The Chameleon.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) was a German American architect and pioneer of modernism. Alongside Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer, he created an influential architectural style, characterised by clarity and simplicity. His buildings made use of modern materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to define interior spaces.
