“We start where Presidential Suites end,” says Parisian born Lionel Alvarez, the Head of Hotel Operations at Villas del Mar in Los Cabos, Mexico.
And if anyone is qualified to compare the rental program at the 180-estate gated community to a five-star resort, it is certainly Alvarez. With 35 years at top properties in the Seychelles, Mauritius, Bora Bora and legendary groups such as Aman and Rosewood Alvarez has seen his share of the world’s finest resorts.
“We have villas that are 5,000 square feet with private pools that are nearly as large as the pool you will have at a hotel,” Alvarez notes. There is also a magnificently appointed private beach club, Club 96 with an outdoor pool bar and indoor hand carved wooden bar with a nearly one story high backdrop. Beams on the vaulted ceiling are hand painted. Overstuff leather chairs remind one of a lodge.
A gourmet restaurant serves local and international specialties. Of course you can eat in your villa with cooking done by your private chef or have a barbeque on your outdoor patio via state of the art Viking grill. If you want accompany your chef to the local market to help pick your dinner from freshly caught seafood.
Club Espiritu features a yoga studio, weights and aerobics machines on par with a top city center fitness club, a lap pool, tennis courts, basketball court, kid’s play area and private spa treatment rooms although one can have any spa service in their villa, perhaps outdoor by your private pool if you wish. If you want gym equipment brought to your villa, voila.
Only about 40 of the 180 three to six bedroom residences are in the rental pool, and with a mix of owners from the pages of Forbes and Fortune and other uber entrepreneurs you’ve never heard of, Alvarez says that providing a level of service on par with world class hotel resorts is a basic requirement the homeowners demand and rental guests benefit from.
While you probably won’t want to come out of your villa, Alvarez and his team will tempt you, creating memorable experiences, such as a sunset cocktail served by a butler atop the peak of the resort’s mountain with 360 degrees views of Los Cabos, the Sea of Cortez and Pacific Ocean. If you prefer, how about a bonfire on the beach? For two people or 50, with a mariachi band or violinist anything can be done. Of course, one only needs to go out on their patio to see whales breaching just off-shore.
Do you give up anything when you stay at Villas del Mar instead of a luxury resort? “No,” says Alvarez and with nightly rates that start around $2,500 pricing is in fact very competitive to the higher end suites at top resorts.
