Football is a way of life for many Basques who are passionate about the game and support their team, Athletic Bilbao with fervor.
Athletic Bilbao is one of only three teams to have competed in the Spanish top division since it began in 1928, the other two being the mighty Real Madrid and Barcelona. Uniquely, Athletic Bilbao focuses solely on home-grown talent, at one time only selecting players from the Basque region to feature in the team. This ruling has relaxed a little, although Athletic fans remain fiercely loyal and match day is a major event in Bilbao. The team’s brand new stadium is being constructed right next to the old San Mamés Stadium, and is expected to be ready by 2014. Tickets can be purchased from the stadium and the team usually plays on a Sunday evening, although some games may be played on a Saturday or Wednesday.
