Israel’s historic Dan Carmel hotel, set atop Mount Carmel overlooking the Mediterranean port city of Haifa, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month.
Opened in 1963 as the only five-star hotel in northern Israel, the Dan Carmel has hosted a wide range of international dignitaries and celebrities in its 50-year existence, from US President Jimmy Carter, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and King Badouin of Belgium to movie stars Sophia Loren, Peter Finch, Peter Ustinov, Melina Mercouri, Joan Fontaine and author James Michener, among others.
The focal point of the Dan Carmel’s semicentennial anniversary is last year’s massive 19-million dollar renovations, which featured the redesigning of the hotel’s 227 rooms and suites to include 42” flat screen TVs, over-sized bathrooms and modern furnishings, as well as panoramic views of the Carmel region, Galilee and Mediterranean Sea.

The city of Haifa has evolved more and more into a must-see destination for international travelers arriving in Israel. The city has recently reconstructed its historic German Colony, Old Turkish Bazar, and next year, will complete the transformation of its Mediterranean harbor into a pedestrian-friendly promenade modeled after the port cities of Barcelona and Vancouver.
