Scotch whisky
Liquor & Liqueur houses a variety of whiskies from a number of famous whisky-producing regions in Scotland, including Speyside, where nearly half of Scotland’s 100 distilleries are located. This includes the Aberlour 16 Year Old (HK$1,050) well-known for its soft heather honey-ish character and smooth spun sugar, caramel palate – distinctive of the Speyside Region.
Islay, one of the southernmost Inner Hebridean Islands located off the west coast of Scotland is home to famous Scottish distilleries including Laphroaig, which produces one of the most strongly flavoured of all Scotch whiskies. The Laphroaig 18 Year Old (HK$1,800), with its peat coating and long liquorice and hickory flavour is a prime example of whisky from Islay and makes for the perfect gift for Scotch whisky lovers.
Japanese whisky
The Japanese have recently been changing the landscape of whisky and the Hibiki 21 Year Old (HK$3,580) is no exception. With its sweet, dark toffee nose and dark cherry palate this flagship whisky from Suntory has won a multitude of awards including World’s Best Blended Whisky at the 18th International Spirits Challenge 2013. The Hibiki 21 Year Old is perfect for an after-dinner indulgence.
American Bourbon
From Scotland and Japan to the United States, Liquor & Liqueur carries whiskies from around the world to suit each individual palate. In the United States, the most well-known style of whisky produced is bourbon. Eagle Rare 10 Year Old (HK$590) is an exclusive Single Barrel Bourbon Whisky with a complex aroma of toffee with hints of orange peel, herbs and honey. It has a smooth, lingering taste with notes of candied almonds and rich cocoa, making it the perfect companion for a casual dinner.
Rare whiskies at Liquor & Liqueur
Single Cask whiskies are some of the rarest and most exclusive whiskies available at Liquor & Liqueur. Single Cask whiskies are a premium class, where each bottle is produced from an individual barrel. Only a certain number of bottles can be produced from one barrel ensuring that there is a finite number.
Some of the finest Single Cask Single Malt Scotch Whiskies come from independent bottlers Douglas Laing and include the Macallan 20 Year Old by Old Malt Cask (HK$2,080) available at Liquor & Liqueur.
Another range of rare whiskies available at Liquor & Liqueur includes the Macallan 18 Gran Reserva series (HK$22,900), which was released around the turn of the century. These releases were made in small batches from casks that were too good to be vatted into the standard 18 year old release and are highly prized by collectors today.
Tasting whisky
When it comes to tasting whisky, Liquor & Liqueur recommends using the Glencairn Whisky Glass (HK$150). It is the essential glass for any single malt lover. The Glencairn whisky glass is the only whisky glass that was designed entirely for whisky drinking to promote nosing and sipping.
At Liquor & Liqueur, smelling or nosing your whisky is as important as tasting it. Before you taste your whisky it is important to raise the whisky up to your nose until you begin to capture its aroma. Next, when tasting the whisky, it is common practice to hold the first sip of whisky in the mouth for the same number of seconds as the age of the whisky to experience the full range of flavors.
