2015 is fast becoming the year of the smart-watch, with Gucci Timepieces becoming the latest brand to join the trend.
Partnering up with musician will.i.am’s i.am+, Gucci announced at Baselworld 2015 that the standalone watch will operate without the need for any pre-existing smartphones, setting it apart from any other smartphone and smart-watch devices on the market.
The Gucci smart-watch will be able to make and receive calls, send and receive text messages and emails, store music and apps, track your fitness and even act as a personal assistant activated by voice commands.
Stéphane Linder, President and CEO of Gucci Timepieces, said during the announcement: “Today, through this innovative collaboration with i.am+ and will.i.am, Gucci Timepieces is fully embracing the future of wearable technology that is now ahead of us, with the objective of launching a wearable device concept that is a fashion accessory, incorporating the most comprehensive and advanced technological functionalities.“
will.i.am added, “i.am+ and Gucci Timepieces are setting the pace with our vision for a untethered wearable. In creating a device that is both fashionable and technologically advanced, we aim to define this category. I coined the term “fashionology” …a merging of the worlds of fashion and technology, and that is exactly what this collaboration with Gucci represents.”
Although it may initially seem like an unlikely pairing, will.i.am has been involved in technology and fashion before joining the Black Eyed Peas, having previously studied at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in LA. He has also previously launched Ekocycle clothes with Coca Cola at Harrods this year.
The Gucci watch is expected to compete alongside the likes of Apple, long recognised as one of technology’s most luxurious brands. The Apple Watch comes in 18k Rose and Yellow Gold finishes, is estimated to cost $10,000, and will be released on April 24th. There is no word on price or release date from Gucci as of yet.
