London’s Bar Scene Dominates in World’s Best 50 Bars 2013

By Laura Walkinshaw

Forever Young_The LanghamLondon’s Artesian bar at the Langham London has taken the number one spot in the World’s Best 50 Bars survey for the second year running.

The award-winning Artesian bar, run by Alex Kratena and Simone Caporale, was one of four bars in London to scoop a place in the top ten of Drinks International‘s annual industry poll, which was unveiled at One Mayfair in London last night.

Lucy Britner, editor of The World’s 50 Best Bars, described the Artesian as a “worthy winner”.

“The bar won last year and instead of becoming complacent, sought to introduce a truly original new menu with some bonkers drinks on it,” she added.

The Nightjar, in Old Street, came second in the World’s 50 Best Bars survey, while High Five in Tokyo came third in the listing – and also took the title of Best Bar in Asia – followed by the Connaught Bar, in Mayfair, at fourth place.

New York’s Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grog was fifth, Happiness Forgets, in Hoxton Square, moved up six places from its 2012 position to be ranked sixth, and Black Pearl, in Melbourne, came seventh in the overall list and was also named Best Bar in Australasia.

Eighth place went to Baxter Inn, Sydney, while Candelaria, Paris, came in at ninth and became the Best Bar in Europe. The tenth spot went to 28 Hong Kong Street in Singapore.

Other London highlights were Callooh Callay in 11th place, The American Bar at The Savoy in 20th, 69 Colebooke Row in 27th and the Zetter Townhouse in 34th.

“It has been great to see so many new bars on the list this year,” Britner added. “Not all of [the bars] are new openings, either, which is a testament to the constant creativity and innovation in the bar industry.

“As for cities to visit for bar crawls – Moscow is looking pretty interesting, as is Singapore. Sydney and Melbourne are definitely worth a visit, too.”

The independent World’s 50 Best Bars poll is compiled by an academy of more than 200 worldwide bar industry experts, who vote anonymously.
