Nihiwatu Resort Welcomes Mark Healey to Create World-class Ocean-Going Adventures

By Zahra Al-Kateb

The renowned Nihiwatu Resort on Sumba Island, East Indonesia is pleased to welcome professional waterman Mark Healey and his newly formed company Healey Water Operations (HWO) to their extraordinary list of activities.

Healey, founder and head of operations, is an internationally recognized professional big wave surfer, free diver, awarded spear fisherman, and dedicated conservationist. A native of Hawaii’s famed North Shore, Healey’s passion for the ocean has led him across the globe. Beginning his professional career at a very young age afforded Mark the advantage of greatly polishing his multiple ocean-going skills, while also diversifying his interests.

Now Mark’s journey has truly brought him to the “edge of wildness”, on the shores of Nihiwatu, with the desire to share the joys of the ocean amongst other free-spirited guests. No matter how timid or comfortable a guest is in the sea, the HWO team can assist in creating a memorable experience that will transcend through a lifetime.

As a resort with a maximum occupancy of 40 guests during its peak season, HWO is in the unique position to customize and tailor its activities to individual guest’s specific desires. With the luxury of multiple boats docked at the resort, the HWO crew can provide immediate service for a host of gratifying activities for the physical and inner being.

Mark can be sought out for private instruction for an array of different water related activities with one of the best in the world. Mark’s time and private instruction come at an elevated hourly rate, but that rate goes back to the Sumba Foundation in full.

Mark and HWO aim to deliver once-in-a-lifetime aquatic experiences, customized to any level of needs, skill-set or appetite. Directly in front of the resort is the famous left hand break “Nihiwatu,” and HWO is equally as excited to take a credentialed wave-rider out to paddle into the best waves of their life, as they are to help a beginner in their first experience of the ocean.

Healey’s said: “As HWO continues to understand and explore the opportunities in West Sumba, our goal is to continue to evaluate, expand and customize the best ways for guests to have unparalleled ocean experiences. Choosing Nihiwatu as HWO’s base of operations was an easy decision. The location is unlike one I have ever experienced anywhere; that gives my team and I the ability to plan and execute an array of unique and personal interactions with the ocean for guests of all ages.”
