Why Napa Valley’s Lewis Cellars Should be on Oenophiles’ Radar

Over three decades, Lewis Cellars has grown into an exceptional producer capable of delivering a wine of the year.

By Elite Traveler

For over three decades, Lewis Cellars — heralding from the world-renowned terroir of California’s Napa Valley — has crafted wines that exude the bold, opulent flavors that this region is known for. Napa Valley is highly regarded as the area that produces some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon that can be found anywhere in the world, with some of the biggest names in winemaking calling it home. Add to that list Lewis Cellars, a producer whose wine carries all of the iconic, bold qualities that have made Napa Valley wine so desirable over the years.

Lewis Cellars sets out to create wine that is an experience for all the senses; a wine that bears a decadent inviting color, a sumptuous aroma and a superior taste. So much so that it is often considered a hidden gem by those who have discovered this producer. It also strives to create bottles that are unique – no mean feat in an industry where the level of competition is exceptionally high.

Not that Lewis Cellars seems to have any issue with pressure. In 2016, the small, close-knit team at Lewis Cellars produced Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year, with the brand’s 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon coming out on top against tough, established competition.

Producing superior wine is no easy task. It takes years of experience, a true desire not to rest on laurels following an initial success and, of course, a lot of luck. Weather conditions can vastly change the outcome of wine – this is why certain wines from key years can skyrocket in price. However the team at Lewis Cellars has cracked the code.

Of course, it’s the sumptuous, bold, full-bodied reds that this region is known for. Lewis Cellars latest release, the 2022 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, being a great example. This is the latest release of the 2013 wine that won Wine of the Year and is the ideal bottle to buy now and hold onto for a special occasion. Expected to reach maturity in a few years, it’s set to be at the ideal drinking age between 2025 – 2030, so perhaps a full case makes more sense ensuring your cellar is stocked with superb Napa reds for years to come.

It’s not all reds, though: Lewis Cellars also produces a variety of white wines such as its 2023 Sauvignon Blanc and the 2023 Chardonnay, both of which make excellent choices.

Those looking to sample complex, ageable wines from an exceptional, yet lesser-known Napa Valley producer should have Lewis Cellars on their radar.
