The Dark and Smoky by Vapoura Rum

The smokiness comes from Lapsang tea syrup which complements the rum’s spiced flavor notes.

According to The Drinks Business, sales of dark rum in the UK are booming. The overall rum category is up by 83.5% in 2023, sparking a ‘Rum Renaissance.’ Vapoura is a new premium English rum brand that is fully embracing this renaissance and has recently revealed a new expression

Vapoura takes its name from the vapourer moth which can also be seen on the bottle. The brand’s name is a nod to the moth seeking light in the darkness, as the idea for the rum was conceived during the Covid-19 lockdown — a period of darkness for many.

There are currently two small-batch expressions available. Vapoura Gold is the newest release and has a unique yeast strain method, using a proprietary yeast strain that has been developed over a decade. The Gold rum has notes of vanilla, caramel, raisins, tobacco and chocolate.

According to Charles Barkley, CEO and co-founder: “Selecting the right notes and ingredients to elevate the raw molasses has been perfected by our master distiller Dr John Walters, affectionately known as The Rum Wizard, and has opened our eyes to the sheer quality of rum Vapoura is able to create. Combining a traditionally artisanal approach with our proprietary distillation process, we have created a liquid that truly brings experimentation to the booming rum category.”

Vapoura Spiced, which was launched earlier this year, has notes of blood orange, lime, nutmeg, cracked black cardamom, vanilla, pink peppercorn, bay leaves, ginger, and fresh turmeric. Both expressions can be sipped neat or can be used in cocktails.

The Vapoura Spiced Rum is used in this week’s cocktail recipe, the Dark and Smoky. A take on the Dark and Stormy, the smokiness comes courtesy of Lapsang tea syrup which brings a deeper dimension to the rum’s spiced flavor notes.
