The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series took place in Bermuda October 16-18, 2015, but that was just the beginning of a series of thrilling sailing events leading up to the 35th America’s Cup, presented by Louis Vuitton in 2017.
Boasting the perfect weather and conditions for sailing, Bermuda has become a hotspot for the sport. In addition to hosting the Argo Gold Cup and the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series this October, Bermuda has attracted such popular races as the RC44 Championship Tour and the Flying Phantom Series.
In addition, the M32 Bermuda Winter Series will be held throughout the early months of 2016. The M32 Series is the next generation of racing, as these carbon fiber speed machines are extremely light, allowing for the hulls to skim the surface as the boat glides through the water. The M32 Bermuda Winter Series will take place January 8-10, February 26-28, March 5-6, March 11-13, and April 15-17, 2016.
“We have new sailing events because Bermuda is part of the global sailing conversation in a way it wasn’t before,” said Bermuda Tourism Authority’s CEO Bill Hanbury, himself a sailing aficionado. “I think the island is really going to come into the world spotlight as an amazing sailing destination and somewhere the America’s Cup could be for a long time.”
Leading up to the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup, which takes place from May to June 2017, Bermuda will launch a 21-month stretch of sailing regattas. “The RC44 in March, the Flying Phantom in November and the Moth Regatta in December are all examples of how sailing can help us smooth out the ‘shoulder season,’” Mr. Hanbury said. “Having beautiful weather in Bermuda allows for the island to not only host events in the summer months, but also the winter months.”
The Bermuda Tourism Authority Sailing Race Calendar was released recently. Included in the calendar are events including the Newport Bermuda Race (June 17-25, 2016), the Argo Gold Cup (October 2016) and the Viper North America Race (November 14-19, 2016).
