New York, New York – Reported by Kim Kavin for Elite Traveler Magazine, the private jet lifestyle magazine
Escape from the cold and spend your winter months exploring the British Virgin Islands by sailing yacht. These top-of-the-line sailing yachts boast hot tubs, theaters, and exhilarating sailing speeds. The following are some of our top picks.
Annagine
The 111-foot Annagine is a product of smart construction during the global recession. Her owner wanted a sailing yacht with the pedigree of Holland’s finest shipyards but also wanted to retain full control over the build process. He created an entity called J.O.M., hired world-class designers Dijkstra & Partners and set up shop close to renowned builders Jongert and Holland Jachtbouw. Annagine is thus a 2011 launch from a company no one has heard of, but that bears beautiful similarities in construction, quality and outfitting to some of the best-known sailing yachts in the world. She is available for racing charters in addition to regular cruising. Her official specifications list a maximum speed of 11 knots, but the captain has already seen 14. The lowest weekly base rate is about $47,856 for eight guests with three crew.
King’s Ransom
At 76 feet long, the sisterships King’s Ransom, Akasha and Zingara are well known as some of the largest and most luxurious sailing catamarans available in the BVI. King’s Ransom is the newest of the three, launched in 2008 and meticulously maintained ever since. She has a king-bed master cabin plus four queen-bed guest cabins, making her an ideal yacht for five adult couples who want to enjoy a charter together. There is a hot tub on the sundeck as well as a theater system in the main saloon. A Hobie Wave sailing dinghy is among the water toys available to charter guests. The lowest weekly inclusive rate is $51,400 for ten guests with four crew.
Kestrel
Kestrel is a 106-foot Ron Holland design that launched in 2012 from the Aganlar shipyard in Turkey. She is the first of her kind from an owner who has a background in gulet charter, and who wanted to bring the comforts of the historic Turkish motor sailers to a platform with better performance characteristics. Kestrel boasts innovative features such as sliding cockpit seating that creates an open outdoor party space. The lowest weekly base rate is about $60,127 for eight to ten guests with four crew.
Hemisphere
At 145 feet long, the Pendennis Hemisphere is the largest luxury sailing catamaran available for charter in the world. Her owner recently took delivery of a custom-built, 54-foot F&S sport fishing boat that will be an ideal platform for fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving in the BVI. A 27-foot Scorpion tender and a 14-foot Castoldi jet wave rider are also part of the water sports array for exploring harbors in style. The lowest weekly base rate is $245,000 for 12 guests with eight to ten crew.
Pacific Wave
The custom-built sailing yacht Pacific Wave, built by America’s Cup competitor Azzurra, is just 72 feet long, but her owners’ sensibilities are on par with those of many top megayachts. They strive to offer the most luxurious BVI sailing experience aboard a yacht of any size, with Villeroy & Boch tableware, Molton Brown spa products and Egyptian-cotton linens. Chef Mark Miles, a perennial award-winner in culinary competitions throughout the charter industry, serves exquisite dishes inspired by the sea. The lowest weekly inclusive rate is $18,000 for six guests with two crew.
