On Tuesday December 16th, Ken Jowdy Chairman of the Board of Diamante development and resort, located in Cabo San Lucas welcomed nearly four hundred attendees for the opening of the second Diamante Golf Course and welcomed the famous world renowned golfer and golf course designer Tiger Woods.
The community features a 1.5-mile white sand beach, a 10-acre saltwater lagoon and various other amenities including the new Woods-designed golf course.
Some of the guests of honor who had the pleasure to welcome Tiger Woods and the new Golf Course were the governor of Baja California Sur (BCS), Marcos Covarrubias, and Secretary of Tourism of the state of Baja California Sur, Ruben Reachi.
Tiger Woods had already said: “I’m very excited about the opening of El Cardonal,” Woods said. “This is a culmination of a dream for me and my team. I’ve always wanted to be involved in golf course design, and now my first course is ready to open.”
The course, which features dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean, the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains and the El Faro lighthouse is the first completed project from Tiger Woods Design. The course will play 7,363 yards from the back tees and features flash-faced bunkers similar to those Woods became familiar with playing golf as a youngster in southern California
El Cardonal, named for the ranch that previously occupied the site, features wide landing areas, open entrances to green complexes and strategic choices. Woods has taken from some of his favorite old-style courses in California. The idea was to create a course that is challenging to better players while remaining enjoyable and playable for golfers of all skill levels. There are five sets of tees available to play.
.”I designed El Cardonal at Diamante to make you think,” Woods said. “You must be willing to weigh risks and make smart choices. Proper strategy will provide the best opportunity to score. The biggest compliment I can receive after you play my course is that you want to play it again.”
El Cardonal joins the highly regarded Dunes Course named, in 2010, as the top new international golf course in the world by Golf Magazine as well as the 52nd in the world. Also, Dunes was named as the #1 golf course in all of Mexico according to Golf Digest Magazine (May 2012).
After the opening speeches, Woods, who appeared to be in a very good mood, prepared to warm up and show the audience his routine before starting any game. In a pleasant and simple manner he explained every stroke during his warm-ups with different golf clubs, joking and telling stories. Then he began the first 9 holes with a spectacular opening swing.
A full day of activities was complemented by a tournament with guests using both the new course of El Cardonal and the Dunes golf course followed up with a dinner of champions. Also announced was the planned construction of a Hard Rock Café Hotel with 600 rooms and another hotel under the luxury brand “Novu” with 200 rooms.
