Often referred to as the Marlin Capital of the world, the Sea of Cortes is once again attracting sport fishing enthusiasts from around the globe to Los Cabos for the 2015 tournament season.
The 17th annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament takes place October 13 – 17; and is best known as the premier, environmentally friendly event, given its use of non-offset circle hooks to ensure the highest survival rate for released fish. The Billfish Tournament is a team event, which tallies the most points per pound and awards the top three teams. Last year’s tournament awarded $40,000 in total. This year, a total of $10,000 will be awarded each day of the tournament. Just a few days prior to Bisbee’s Black and Blue Tournament, regarded as “The Richest Fishing Tournament in The World”, Los Cabos Offshore Tournament, fondly referred to as “Little Bisbee’s”, provides anglers with a laidback reel before competing in the big payday. With registration at Hotel Tesoro on October 16, and two days fishing this event is filled with camaraderie and is considered to be a great way to get ready for the “Big Show”.
The Bisbee’s Black & Blue Tournament, taking place October 20 – 24, is considered the sport’s most exclusive tournament, as it is one of the largest paying worldwide. For over 30 years, Bisbee’s Black and Blue Tournament has taken place in Los Cabos; and this year, it’s expected to, exceed prior performance. Moreover, in an effort to promote ecological conservation and preserve the black and blue marlin population, this tournament employs a catch and release formation in which participants are rewarded for every catch they release back into the sea. A total of 137 boats and 690 anglers from countries including Japan, Russia, Australia New Zealand, USA, Canada, and Mexico competed in the 2014 tournament for more than $2 million dollars in prizes. Already ahead of 2014 enrollment, the 16th annual Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot takes place November 4 – 7, and is expected to be the largest in 10 years. Last year’s turnout was not only remarkable, but also record-breaking. Just six weeks after Hurricane Odile struck, 131 teams carried on and the Tuna Jackpot awarded over $511,200 in prize money and $150,000 in drawing prizes and angler gifts. Additionally, the Tuna Jackpot raised over $50,000 to help rebuild 15 crew and Captain’s homes within the Los Cabos area. This year, with more sponsors and participants, prizes and awards are expected to soar.
