250 East 21st Street: The NYC Property with Parisian Charm

Property of the Week: This Gramercy property boasts some of the finest European architecture in the heart of Manhattan.

By Bea Isaacson

You’d be forgiven for thinking 250 East 21st Street was a film set for a Midnight in Paris sequel. Bathed in light, the apartment building features the elegant bay windows and timeless limestone façade that has we associate more with the capitals of Europe than the bustling streets of American cities. New York City living has never felt more chic.

Designed by Issac & Stern Architects, 250 East 21st Street manages to blend in perfectly with the prewar charm so associated with the Gramercy Park neighborhood the apartment block resides in, whilst also standing out as a wondrous piece of architecture in its own right. Naturally, any property available within this building commands our attention; but it’s the Residence 10B that has especially captured our interest.

Coming in at 2,468 ft, the three-bedroom apartment is a real masterclass in understated elegance so championed across the pond. Tall windows usher in gorgeous light throughout the day, casting the property in a particularly spell-bounding charm. The open living and dining rooms are spacious, with the warm tones of the wood and upholstery further enhancing the ambience.

The interiors have been designed by Paris Forino, and furnished by Ash Staging, a division of Manhattan’s Ash NYC. The soft blue cabinetry of the kitchen adds character to the property without overwhelming it; the black and white stone cocktail table weaves in a touch of Art Deco. This is a space that impresses in a manner that not once feels purposeful.

The primary bedroom features Serge Mouille sconces that pair wonderfully with the Kelly Wearstler walnut nightstands, whereas the more contemporary third bedroom is bolder in its use of color and space. Our favorite detail? The study: the chocolate velvet upholstery of the sofa, inspired by Edward Wormley, feels timelessly elegant without every once looking outdated.

“250 East 21st Street is a romantic Parisian-style building influenced by a pre-war charm that New Yorkers are known to love,” commented Paris Forino.

“Our goal in designing the interiors was to echo that charm through all the detailing. 250 East 21st Street exhibits a lightness and a charisma that you don’t see in a lot of new developments.”

The old-school glamor of French architecture similarly inspired the Ash Staging team.

“The generous room proportions, ample light, and spectacular views gave us the perfect canvas to work with and we let the space speak for itself in many areas,” said Dylan Stilin, East Coast Director of Ash Staging. “Our team was inspired by the neo-Parisian style of the space.”

Best for last, the most exciting – and definitely most Parisian – detail of the apartment is the balcony. A total sun trap, the 339 sq ft outdoor terrace is big enough for intimate dinners and summer hosting, whilst maintaining that continental magic we just adore so much.
