Wine & Spirits

Stag’s Leap, CASK 23 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

The Stag’s Leap Estate Collection with the CASK 23 (right) the pick of the bunch / ©Stag’s Leap

Napa Valley rules the roost when it comes to Cabernet Sauvignon, and today’s upstarts have Stag’s Leap to thank. It was this plucky vineyard that established California’s wine-growing prowess when it pitted itself against Old World wines in the 1970s. In 1973, a bottle of its Estate Collection won out against the established titans in an entirely French panel. Today, that bottle is celebrated as one of the Objects That Made America by The Smithsonian. While those mythical bottles are long since spoken for, you can get a taste of the magic with its CASK 23 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Combining the perfume notes of FAY and the dark fruit and structure of S.L.V, CASK 23 is harvested from specific blocks in each vineyard. The result is a wine with a vibrant mouthfeel and blackberry and currant flavors.

Glenglassaugh, The Serpentine Collection

Glenglassaugh whisky
Glenglassaugh Serpentine Collection 48 Year Old / ©Glenglassaugh

Glenglassaugh is one of those whisky distilleries that more people should know about. Ideally placed on the east coast of Scotland, it produces a whisky that incorporates the best of Highland and island whisky – lots of fresh fruit with touches of sea salt and minerality. The Serpentine Collection is Glenglassaugh’s first foray into the fine and rare market, incorporating three highly aged single-cask whiskies.

Although all three have a similar age (48, 49 and 51 years old), they are remarkably different in their textures and styles. The 48 Year Old was aged in a rare Aleatico red wine barrique, giving it a dark and fruity texture. The 49 Year Old was aged in a typical ex-bourbon barrel, which allows the distillery’s enviable characteristics to shine. The 51 Year Old was an ex-Olorosso sherry cask, giving it the typically dry and spicy texture of an aged Scotch whisky.

You’ll be pleased to know our pick is also the cheapest: The 48 Year Old is available for an SRP of $9,500. Expect a delicious melange of lychee and dried raspberries with a touch of sea salt. Delicious.

The Glenturret, Jaguar C-Type

whisky in front of cars
The Glenturret Jaguar C-Type whisky / ©The Glenturret

So much good has come out of The Glenturret in recent years, including what Whisky Magazine judged to be the world’s best whisky in 2023. That bottle, the Triple Wood, costs under $100 and is thoroughly recommended for those working on smaller budgets. But if you’re looking for something extra special, this exclusive Jaguar C-Type edition is the perfect gift whether your dad likes collecting or drinking his whisky.

Made in honor of the car that dominated Le Mans and introduced disc brakes to the world, the Jaguar C-Type whisky has been drawn from a mixture of heavy ex-sherry casks (Olorosso and Pedro Ximinez) and ex-bourbon for a delightful combination of flavors. Crafted by the ex-Macallan whisky expert Bob Dalgarno, this is a whisky any sherry-led distillery would be proud of.

Limited to 220 bottles and available for under $3,000, this whisky has massive collectibility potential. If the price never goes up, then you can always crack it open and enjoy it.

Royal Salute 21 Year Old, Miami Polo Edition

Royal Salute whisky bottle
Royal Salute 21 Year Old Miami Polo Edition / ©Royal Salute

Royal Salute is one of the most prestigious Scotch whisky brands in the world. Established in 1953 to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Royal Salute has never released a whisky younger than 21 years old. With its royal connections, it’s no surprise the blended whisky brand also has close associations with the sport of polo. The Miami Polo Edition is the sixth inductee into its Polo Collection, celebrating the vibrant city’s connection with the sport.

This edition celebrates Miami’s night scene with a striking pink decanter and a decorative presentation box displaying the city’s Art Deco architecture. Inside, you’ll find a beautiful whisky made with a blend of first-fill bourbon and first-fill rye casks. That gives the whisky a delightful tropical flavor, with coconut and vanilla front and center. It’s the perfect summer whisky, and therefore perfect for this upcoming Father’s Day.

Midleton Very Rare, Annual Release 2024

Midleton whiskey
Midleton Very Rare annual release / ©Midleton

Midleton Very Rare has been busy this year, first releasing a spectacular $20,000 “Ruby” whiskey before following it up with a $55,000 49 Year Old – the oldest Irish whiskey ever released. The annual release is far more modest by comparison but remains fit for any special occasion.

This non-age statement whiskey draws from a wide range of aged casks, giving it a symphony of flavors from warming butterscotch to aged oak spice. Crafted by the master distiller Kevin O’Gorman, Midleton Very Rare is said to be the pinnacle expression of Irish whiskey. Presented in an eco-conscious presentation box, the bottle has an enduring shelf appeal with its distinctive crevasse and high-quality label – it would improve almost anyone’s home bar.

Clase Azul Mexico, Tequila Gold

Clase Azul Tequila Gold / ©Clase Azul Mexico

Forget the lime and salt: Clase Azul Mexico has been a major player in tequila’s rise to the top shelf. The luxury brand is famed for its distinctive decanters, all hand-made by local artisans. As well as supporting local communities, Clase Azul also makes world-leading tequila. The Tequila Gold is a fine example of the brand’s innovation: a mixture of a reposado tequila matured in French oak casks and an extra añejo finished in sherry casks. The mixed maturation gives it a complex taste including ginger, green olives, figs and toasted oak – perfect for sipping by the campfire on summer nights.

Martell Single Cru Collection, XXO Borderies

Martell cognac
Martell Single Cru Collection, XXO Borderies / ©Martell

Martell doesn’t have the same global recognition as Hennessey or Remy Martin, but it is the oldest of the four great Cognac houses and does more to champion the complexities of the brandy than most. Its Single Cru collection focuses on particular regions within Cognac, all known for producing different flavors but rarely celebrated in their own right. The smallest (and the most underrated) of these regions is the Borderies, which produces floral and fruity cognacs, a vital component in even the most complex blends. The XXO Borderies edition is a remarkable liquid, containing samples aged in the Martell cellars for over 80 years. The retro bottle, a replica of Martell’s old-style design, also has wonderful shelf appeal.

Watches

Tag Heuer X Kith F1

tag Heuer watches
The revived Tag Heuer x Kith F1 watch collection / ©Tag Heuer

If your dad is into watches and cars, odds are he had (or dreamt of having) a Tag Heuer x Kith F1 watch as a child. These cheap quartz watches in plastic cases in pop colors were all the rage when they first launched in 1986. With nostalgia reigning supreme among Gen X and increasing demand for cheaper day-to-day wearers, Tag Heuer has brought back the popular design for a limited run. The watches are available in 10 colors with plastic or steel bracelet straps. Only stocked in selected Tag Heuer and Kith stores, you’ll have to go on a bit of a goose chase or face paying a premium online.

MB&F M.A.D Editions Green

M.A.D. Editions MAD 1 Green / ©M.A.D Editions

MB&F was only founded in 2005 but already has a legion of followers stretching across the globe. Its novel takes on haute horology have inspired HNWs to part with six-figure sums including the HM11 and the Legacy Machine. Six-figure watches aren’t for everyone, however. Recognizing that, MB&F produced a limited quantity of M.A.D Edition watches, a watch at a fraction of the price of its usual timepieces, but all the fun. The Green edition was released in 2023 and included a crazy spinning rotor blade on top. Wearers tell the time on the side of the watch. The initial run of 1,500 watches sold for 2,900 CHF ($3,200) via raffle, so anyone hoping to get one today will have to pay a small premium on second-hand sales websites such as Chrono24 or eBay. But owning a watch made by a company that used to produce only 300 per year is worth the extra cost.

Girard-Perregaux Laureato Chronograph Ti49

girard perregaux watch
Girard-Perregaux Laureato Chronograph Ti49 / ©Girard-Perregaux

As the watch world continues to chase classic sports watches from a few brands, Girard-Perregaux’s eternally beautiful Laureato remains widely available at a reasonable price. One of the original sports watches first launched in 1974, the Laureato’s octagonal design has proved timeless. The Ti49 edition marks the first time the watch has been clad in grade 5 titanium. The Swiss watchmakers chose grade 5 titanium because it is light, strong, non-magnetic and hypoallergenic. It also polishes to a brilliant gleam, meaning the watch will give off a new-look shimmer every time it goes in for a service.

Fragrances

In All Intimacy Rafael Nadal, Henry Jacques

henry jacques rafael nadal perfume

Haute perfume brand Henry Jacques has teamed up with Spanish tennis sensation Rafael Nadal to launch the In All Intimacy collection – a trio of fragrances that mark the brand’s first partnership project. The first two scents are inspired by Nadal’s connection to the Mediterranean. The first, Rafael Nadal N° 1, leads with herbaceous coriander and thyme, with hints of zesty lemon and floral lavender. Undertones of cedarwood and leather added a darker twist. Rafael Nadal N° 2, on the other hand, hits first with bergamot and jasmine, before leading into deeper white must and sandalwood. The third fragrance is intended for women and was created to capture the personality of Nadal’s wife, Maria Perello.

Sony, Laser Home Theater Projector

The Sony VPLXW7000ES / ©Sony

Does your father like to sculk away to his man cave in the evenings, stick on an old film (probably a Western), and reminisce about how they don’t make pictures like this anymore? Well, he’s probably a movie guy, so this Father’s Day why not indulge his most unsociable quality and buy him a top-quality projector.

The Sony VPLXW7000ES, continues the tradition of projectors’ indecipherable names. “Shall we fire up the VPLXW7000ES tonight?” Jokes aside, this projector is capable of mind-bending clear 4k HDR images comprised of over 8 million pixels. Pair this impressive projector with an equally audacious hi-fi system, and what was once a movie, is now a portal into another world.

Of course, power like this comes with a price to match, but for those so inclined sitting back and sticking on a favorite film is a direct route to a good time. And can you really put a price on that?
