Celestial Jewelry: Radiant Pieces to Lighten Dark Nights

Sun, moon and star motifs have long been a celebrated part of jewelry symbolism.

By Orla Pentelow

Sun, moon and star motifs have long been a celebrated part of jewelry symbolism, but a meteor shower of celestial diamonds can really radiate light in the dark nights of deep winter. Fine-jewelry houses have been at it for years: Inspired by her love of the stars, Gabrielle Chanel’s landmark (and only) diamond jewelry collection in 1932 left the house with a vast vocabulary of iconic motifs to reimagine in each subsequent jewelry collection; and Jean Schlumberger’s Stars and Moons necklace for Tiffany & Co. some 20 years later was said to mimic a clear midnight sky. Judging by their heavenly collections, the new kids on the block appreciate the enduring allure of a well-chosen celestial gem too. Paul Morelli’s dramatic double hoops are scattered with a constellation-style showcase of diamonds, while Ara Vartanian’s galactic shapes and otherworldly black diamond and lapis lazuli appear as if viewing Earth from the International Space Station.
