La Fondazione NY Gala Honors Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana and Baz Luhrmann

By Neharika Padala

On December 8th, 2014, La Fondazione NY’s third annual gala took place.

This year the Foundation honored three outstanding individuals: Italian design duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, creators of the iconic fashion label Dolce & Gabbana, and celebrated Academy Award-winning director and patron of cinema Baz Luhrmann. Season after season, with creativity, determination and passion, Dolce & Gabbana became top names in Italian design, and are today one of the leading international groups in the fashion and luxury goods sector.

Luhrmann has become one of the world’s most recognizable creative forces through success in a diverse range of award-winning projects from film, opera, theatre, music, unique events and other mediums. “Every year La Fondazione awards individuals in recognition of their achievements and significant contributions to the arts,” affirms Riccardo Viale, Chariman of La Fondazione NY.

In addition to the evening’s honorees, the Foundation presented its annual Award for Excellence in Finance to Joseph Perella, and the Award for Excellence in Business to Gary Wassner. The evening also included a special preview of the exhibition opening at the Museum of the Moving Image in summer 2015, “Costumes for Cinema from Tirelli Atelier”. “On this evening”, says Dante Ferretti, President of La Fondazione NY, “We are encouraging greater dialogue in the United States about Italian art and culture. For example Tirelli Atelier exhibition showcases iconic Italian
craftsmanship in the world of cinema through costume design. The costumes on display have never been exhibited before in the United States.“ Tirelli Atelier was founded in 1964 by Umberto Tirelli, and has created costumes for cult films such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Brothers Grimm, Titanic, Moulin Rouge, Robin Hood and Alice in Wonderland.

La Fondazione NY is a non-profit organization aimed at supporting young Italian artists by promoting their integration in the American cultural landscape. Similarly, La Fondazione NY supports young American artists, providing access to highly regarded training opportunities in Italy.

Moreover, La Fondazione NY organizes exhibits, translation projects, audiovisual shows, conferences and other cultural events, both in Italy and in the US; highlighting the principle of cultural cooperation between the two countries.

Established in 1985, today Dolce&Gabbana is one of the leading international groups in the fashion and luxury goods sector. The Group designs, produces and distributes high-end clothing, leather goods, footwear, accessories, jewels and watches. Through licensee partners, it manages the production and distribution of the beauty and eyewear lines. The two founders, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, have always been the creative and stylistic source of all brand’s activities as well as the drivers behind the development strategies based on balanced growth on a global scale and focus on the core business.
