On December 8th, 2014, La Fondazione NY’s third annual gala took place.
This year the Foundation honored three outstanding individuals: Italian design duo Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, creators of the iconic fashion label Dolce & Gabbana, and celebrated Academy Award-winning director and patron of cinema Baz Luhrmann. Season after season, with creativity, determination and passion, Dolce & Gabbana became top names in Italian design, and are today one of the leading international groups in the fashion and luxury goods sector.
Luhrmann has become one of the world’s most recognizable creative forces through success in a diverse range of award-winning projects from film, opera, theatre, music, unique events and other mediums. “Every year La Fondazione awards individuals in recognition of their achievements and significant contributions to the arts,” affirms Riccardo Viale, Chariman of La Fondazione NY.
In addition to the evening’s honorees, the Foundation presented its annual Award for Excellence in Finance to Joseph Perella, and the Award for Excellence in Business to Gary Wassner. The evening also included a special preview of the exhibition opening at the Museum of the Moving Image in summer 2015, “Costumes for Cinema from Tirelli Atelier”. “On this evening”, says Dante Ferretti, President of La Fondazione NY, “We are encouraging greater dialogue in the United States about Italian art and culture. For example Tirelli Atelier exhibition showcases iconic Italian
craftsmanship in the world of cinema through costume design. The costumes on display have never been exhibited before in the United States.“ Tirelli Atelier was founded in 1964 by Umberto Tirelli, and has created costumes for cult films such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Brothers Grimm, Titanic, Moulin Rouge, Robin Hood and Alice in Wonderland.
