Where oversized watches were once the ultimate status symbol (and maybe still are in some circles), more petite timepieces have emerged as subtle but sure taste signifiers.
This is no new fad as men’s watch sizes have been shrinking over recent years, with many brands catering for a more unisex sweet spot of around 36mm - 39mm, down from what used to be a typical 42mm. Other factors playing their part: a leaning toward a quieter aesthetic; the emergence of a more open and inclusive watch community; even, in some cities, a reluctance to sport statement sizes in broad daylight.
Smaller pieces give the wearer open options – take, for example, Timothee Chalamet’s penchant for doubling up on watches, or Dua Lipa’s Cartier Mini Panthiere, which she layered amid other hardware.
For those yet to discover size isn’t everything, these are our top picks for chic alternatives to buy now.
The mini watches to buy
-
Cartier Tank Mini
For many, Cartier = Tank (Sotheby’s calls it “one of the most instantly recognizable watch designs of all time”). First released in 1917, when the world was making its move away from pocketwatches, the model is a cult favorite among the great and the good – it was Lady Di’s preferred timepiece, and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy was a fan, too. The petite Mini version was released in 2024 and is a bracelet-esque, Art Deco-inspired, 24mm beauty.
-
Cartier Baignoire
While not quite as emblematic of the brand as the Tank, the Baignoire ticks all the classic, classy Cartier boxes. First revealed in 1912 (and later refined in 1958), the Baignoire has been released in many iterations, from fully diamond encrusted to a crimson-red colorway. Truthfully though, nothing beats the yellow gold case, Roman numeral dial, and black patent strap combination.
-
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Monoface Origin
A newer addition to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s mammoth Reverso collection is the Reverso Classic Monoface Origin. While the range includes many different sizes, this iteration pays homage to the original 1931 model’s dimensions at 32.5 x 16.3mm. There are two versions: one with a polished steel bracelet, the other with a blue alligator strap.
-
Hermés Cape Cod Mini
In early 2026, Hermés diversified its popular Cape Cod line up – first released in 1991 – with the launch of the Cape Cod Mini, which measures in at 27mm (4mm than the ‘small’ version). The piece’s defining feature is its signature ‘square within a rectangle’ design, which has come to represent the Cape Cod line. The Mini collection is offered in either steel or yellow gold, and a variety of colorful dials – but the crimson makes a statement.
-
Rolex Oyster Perpetual 28mm
At Watches and Wonder 2026, Rolex introduced an 18-carat yellow-gold Oyster Perpetual with a green stone dial in a positively petite 28mm. It’s still robust and novel (its 3, 6, and 9 hour markers are made of natural stone, in a Rolex first), but a touch more discreet than some of its predecessors.
-
Graff Wild Flower Diamond Watch
Small but very, very mighty, Graff’s Wild Flower Diamond measures in at just 18mm, with an equally dainty bracelet strap – the real attention grabber is the shower of white diamonds that adorn it. Clustered across the dial, the strap, and the case, as well as two off-center flower motifs, the diamonds total 8.16 carats.
-
Chanel Boy.Friend
Chanel’s Boy.Friend is a mainstay on the brand’s watch circuit, with its sleek, no-fuss shape a red-carpet favorite. Although officially billed as a women’s timepiece, you’ll have seen this one on the wrists of several A-list men, including internet boyfriend Pedro Pascal. Chanel offers a hefty customization service for the Boy.Friend (you can go up to 37x29mm, if you prefer), including tweed straps and diamond-set cases.
