SIHH Report: Ralph Lauren Introduces Black Safari Collection with Flying Tourbillon

By Chris Boyle

Black Safari Collection with Flying TourbillonFounded on the philosophy that function and beauty are eternally interconnected, the Ralph Lauren Sporting collection combines the masculine elegance of Ralph Lauren’s most powerful inspirations with horology’s highest level of technical sophistication.

Evoking the African journey of a lifetime, Ralph Lauren introduces its Black Safari collection with a Flying Tourbillon. Playing with contrasts, the timepiece juxtaposes a sporting silhouette with the ultimate luxury of watchmaking. The self-winding manufacture movement’s centerpiece, a flying tourbillon with mounted small seconds, is showcased through an aperture at 6 o’clock. Interrupting the time-display circle on which two luminescent sword-shaped hands orbit, the tourbillon cage demonstrates a level of micromechanical complexity that brilliantly contrasts the watch’s black case in shot-blasted stainless steel.

Reminiscent of the racing motifs and sleek edge of the Ralph Lauren Black Label men’s collection, the Ralph Lauren Sporting Classic Chronometer boasts a lustrous stainless steel case accentuated by a matte black dial with white Roman numerals and railroad-track-style minute markers. Driven by the COSC-certified RL366 caliber oscillating at 28,800vph, decorated with Côtes de Genève and perlage, the mechanical self-winding wristwatch indicates the hours and minutes, as well as small seconds via a railroad-track framed subdial at 6 o’clock.

Combining classical subtleties, such as the use of Breguet-style hands, with a sophisticated mechanical movement, the Ralph Lauren Sporting Classic Chronometer unites past and present in a bold demonstration of the brand’s watchmaking mastery.

Inspired by the rugged romance of a safari, the Ralph Lauren RL67 Chronometer is presented for the first time with a 39mm case. It features an aged steel case made possible by a technical treatment that transforms the blackened steel into a sublime patina and is complemented by an intense black canvas strap. Injecting a touch of noble horological refinement to a timepiece built for the most extreme adventures, the COSC-certified RL300-1 caliber, driving the luminescent hour and minute hands as well as shiny orange seconds stem, is embellished with vertical Côtes de Genève and perlage.
