The Suite
Taking up the entire eighth floor of the Fairmont San Francisco, the Penthouse Suite functions more like a private residence than a temporary stay. While the private patio offers clear sightlines across the bay and downtown, the interior design is the main event here.
The double-level library, stocked with a substantial collection, provides an intimate atmosphere perfect for quiet reflection. For formal occasions, the grand dining room seats fourteen beneath a striking floral mural. A more distinct space is the billiard room, designed with intricate tile work and rich colors that evoke the atmosphere of an Ottoman palace.
Throughout the living areas, rich wood paneling and plush seating establish a sense of sophistication. Contemporary art accents the space, and the living room fireplace offers the ideal setting to unwind after a day exploring the city. The amenities are comprehensive. Guests retreat to a luxurious bedroom defined by a serene map mural, completing the experience of staying in a truly singular city home.
The Hotel
The historic Beaux-Arts property opened in 1907 – exactly one year after the Great Earthquake and subsequent fire that destroyed the city – and quickly became a symbol of San Francisco’s rebirth. As the luxury brand’s flagship, it’s seriously glamorous. The lobby is unashamedly extravagant; expect soaring columns, enormous potted plants and gilded accents at every turn. A favored spot among the rich and famous, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole are among the stars to have graced its hallowed walls. Dining options are plentiful; be sure to grab a bite to eat and a cocktail at the Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar. Crafted by a Hollywood set designer (who else?), the focal point is the hotel’s former swimming pool which has been transformed into a ‘lagoon’.
