Called Bangkok by tourists and referred to as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (City of Angels) by Thais, the city’s official name is actually an impressive 64 syllables long and roughly translates as follows: great city of angels, the supreme repository of divine jewels, the great land unconquerable, the grand and prominent realm, the royal and delightful capital city full of nine noble gems, the highest royal dwelling and grand palace, the divine shelter and living place of the reincarnated spirits.

As this lengthy title suggests Bangkok offers a wealth of culture, from the breathtaking architecture of the Grand Palace to inspiring Buddhist shrines. Tour Bangkok’s labyrinth of canals on a traditional long-tail boat and visit the city’s energetic food markets. Home to the Wat Pho School of Massage, Bangkok is renowned for its expert therapists and opulent spas. Enjoy an aperitif at one of Bangkok’s chic rooftop bars before dining on authentic Thai cuisine at one of the city’s sumptuously decorated fine dining restaurants.
