ByVibrant red-tiled rooftops, copper spires, Baroque and Renaissance decadence; Prague is nothing if not a fairytale city come to life, complete with castle and cobbled streets. Capital of the Czech Republic, this city was known as ‘Golden Prague’ by Charles IV (for its golden domes) as well as the ‘City of a Hundred Spires’.
The Velvet Revolution, almost 23 years ago, stripped away the final vestiges of the hated Communist Regime and today Prague is a truly cosmopolitan capital attracting millions of visitors each year to appreciate its romantic, cultural and architectural heritage. The river Vltala divides Prague into north and south, with 18 bridges – Charles Bridge being the most famous – connecting the two sides of the city. Prague has five main areas. Old Town, or Staré Město is where tourists flock to see the Town Hall’s Astronomical Clock, and the Lesser Quarter, or Mala Straná, is overlooked by Prague Castle and is where most of the luxury hotels are located. New Town, commonly known to Praguers as Nové Město, has a great commercial vibe. Josefov is the fascinating Jewish Quarter; the former Jewish ghetto that now hosts the glitziest fashion street in Prague.
