Patrizzi & Co’s December 14th auction in New York City will present only collector-level pieces with an edited selection of just 93 watches, clocks and accessories.
“Exceptional Watchmaking Masterpieces—an exclusive collection of remarkable timepieces” will spotlight watchmaking’s achievements in innovation, design and manufacturing excellence that are so essential to its history and future.
“For this December sale in New York, we are changing our approach and staying on collector items rather than secondhand, supermarket selling,” said Osvaldo Patrizzi, president and chief executive officer of Patrizzi & Co. “These pieces can be considered the high couture of horology, with each piece truly exceptional, a dream piece for the collector.”
The printed and online catalog will feature a chapter on the history of each brand represented in the sale along with detailed descriptions and photographs of the timepieces. “The point is to show why the watch has real significance, explaining the evolution of the brand, the technology behind the movement and manufacture, and the aesthetic design—to put all these factors into the proper context to demonstrate the worthiness of the timepiece,” said Patrizzi.
Examples of pieces in the sale are two jeweled and rock crystal Art Déco clocks; a rare collection of Patek Philippe chronographs with perpetual calendar, Ref. 3970, with custom dials; a cloisonné enamel Patek Philippe wristwatch commemorating the Year of the Goat; a Patek Philippe “Celestial,” Ref. 5102; a 1940s extra-flat, pink gold minute repeater by Vacheron Constantin; and for pocket watch lovers, a selection of precious watch keys. In addition, a Patek Philippe Annual Calendar, Ref. 5036/1, and several trophies, all owned by U.S. baseball great Lenny Dykstra, are also featured in the sale.
The traditional auction will be held Monday, December 14, at 2 p.m. at Patrizzi & Co, 595 Madison Avenue, Suite 605. Buyers can bid via phone, written bids, and in real time online via the company’s website, www.patrizziauction.com. A public preview will be held Thursday and Friday, Dec. 10-11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12-13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. During these times, company watch experts will offer appraisals and accept consignments for future auctions. In addition, the collection will be shown by appointment only in Hong Kong on December 7 and 8.
Patrizzi & Co does not charge a buyer’s commission, representing a 20 to 25 percent savings from the hammer price for the buyer. Unlike most auction houses, this means the final sale price reflects the actual value of the timepiece.
