Sotheby’s will be offering 1,009 lots from “Four Fabulous Cellars” during its November 22, 2008, sale in New York. Featuring a diverse selection of fine wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne, including many First Growths, the sale is estimated to bring $2.2/3.2 million.
“Cellar 1” consists of 244 lots, and features a selection of great Champagnes, Burgundy and Bordeaux. Highlights include:
– 3 cases La Tâche 1985 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (est. $40/60,000 per case)
– 12 bottles Richebourg 1990 Leroy (est. $10/15,000)
– 12 bottles Krug, Clos du Mesnil 1986 (est. $7/9,000)

– 1 Imperial (6 liter) Lafite 1982 (est. $15/20,000)
– 1 Imperial (6 liter) Lafite 1961 (est. $10/18,000)
Sotheby’s Worldwide Head of Wine, Serena Sutcliffe, MW, comments: “This is a hedonist’s collection, with immense possibilities for comparing crus and climats as handled by different, brilliant winemakers. You could call it a ‘teaching cellar’ if it was not so pleasurable.”
“Cellar 2” includes 475 lots of important parcel quantities of 1980s Bordeaux, ready to drink and many keenly priced, including:
– 15 cases of Léoville Poyferré 1982 (est. $1,600/2,250 per case)
– 12 cases of Calon Ségur 1982 (est. $1,800/2,500 per case)
– 20 cases of Haut Bailly 1985 ($700/1,000 per case)
“Cellar 3” consists of 39 lots, featuring a great selection of Bordeaux from the 1980s to 2003, many in oversize bottles. Highlights include:
– 2 double magnums of Pétrus 1989 (est. $20/30,000)
– 1 Imperial of Pétrus 1995 (est. $18/25,000)
– 1 Imperial of Cheval Blanc 2000 (est. $9/12,000)
Serena notes: “This is a riveting selection of large format bottles allied to stupendous Bordeaux chateaux and years—plus one sumptuous Barolo! Increasingly, I see these exciting giant bottles being laid down for children or grandchildren, with future landmark birthdays and marriages in mind. This really works, as there is nothing so celebratory as a mature, classic Imperial gracing the table when family history is being made.”
“Cellar 4”offers 251 lots, including quantities of contemporary Bordeaux highlighted by the 2000 and 2003 vintages. This offering ranges in quality from First Growths and Pétrus through other classed growth wines and lesser known left bank gems. Featured are:
