Autumn and spring are the best times to visit New York. From April to mid-June and September to mid- November, the weather is mild and pleasant, and the light is beautiful. With the leaves changing in Central Park and just a hint of crispness in the air, October is a fabulous time to be here. Beware the high humidity of the summer months and the snow and freezing temperatures that winter brings. Although December can be frigid, New York shines with festive holiday-season cheer.
Although New Yorkers generally dress casually, they also love fashion and tend to dress up for weekend nights out and special occasions. Many of the city’s finest restaurants, bars and clubs expect their guests to dress well for the experience. If ever in doubt about the level of formality required, contact the establishment to find out. In the city’s business districts, such as Wall Street and Midtown, many men wear suits and ties, while women typically opt for a conservative-chic look.
New York is five hours behind GMT, and standard business hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Shops normally start their day at 10am and close between 6 and 8pm from Monday through Saturday, though some larger shops will remain open until 9pm on select days. On Sunday, most stores open a little later (11am to noon) and close a little earlier (6pm) than during the week. Large department stores tend to keep the longest hours. Shops are most crowded on weekends and public holidays.
